Impossible-to-find still-sealed original of this fantastic lp, with a selection of dense and hyperkinetic early electronic/musique concrete works for magnetic tape compiled by Pierre Henry (with a gorgeous psychedelic cover targeting the US exploito-psych market!). The impressively structured Ferrari piece contrasts microtonal chord drones with "rhythmic objects" of percussive noise. Berio's Momenti incorporates 92 electronically generated sound frequencies which evolve, dissolve, and then reemerge; Omaggio a Joyce submits the source material (James Joyce recited in 3 different languages) to techniques of transformation and superimposition to gradually convert the text into music. Xenakis' piece uses sounds from cardboard boxes, metal rods, gongs, ionosphere signals, and heavily slowed-down samples from his previous orchestral recordings; it was made to accompany a film about ancient eastern and western sculpture. Maderna's work uses primitive electronically generated tones and balances "extremely prolonged sounds against very short ones". U 47 is made entirely out of recordings of co-composer Dufrene's voice. These essential works are the masterpieces from a period of early experimentation in the electronic medium, and represent the European parallel to Americans working in early electronics like Vladimir Ussachevsky, Otto Luening, Raymond Scott, John Cage, Earle Brown, Morton Feldman, Max Mathews, John R. Pierce, Newman Guttman, and Tod Dockstader.

Ferrari is an electro-acoustic composer who studied under Honegger, Alfred Cortot, and Messiaen, and along with Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry helped found the INA-GRM musique concrete studios (which would become a center of study for pioneers like Francois Bayle, Michel Chion, Jean-Claude Risset, Francois Bernard Mache, Ivo Malec, Bernard Parmegiani, Michel Redolfi, Ragnar Grippe, Jon Appleton, Jean Michel Jarre, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Edgar Varese, and Iannis Xenakis). Xenakis was an architect who worked with Le Corbusier and brought the mathematics and logic of engineering into his "stochastic" music; he studied under Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, and Olivier Messiaen, was influenced by Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage, worked with Pierre Schaeffer (at the INA-GRM studios), Lukas Foss, and Pierre Boulez, and is associated with fellow eastern european Gyorgy Ligeti. Maderna was a conductor and 12-tone composer influenced by Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern who worked with Luciano Berio. Berio was a collaborator with Italo Calvino, an associate of Karlheinz Stockhausen, a pupil of Luigi Dallapiccola and Olivier Messiaen, teacher of Steve Reich, and director of the electro-acoustic department of IRCAM in Paris where he worked with Pierre Boulez. Baronnet worked with Pierre Henry to found the first private electronic music studio (Studio Apsome).
