TITLE:

LUCKY THOMPSON "TENORS ANYONE?" DOT JAPANESE IMPORT MONO LP - SCO 5014 - VG

 DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION:

This LP was apparently recorded while Lucky Thompson was living in France between 1957 and 1961, with a band consisting of many France's finest jazz musicians of the time. Gerard Pochonet is band leader and drummer, with the great Martial Solal on piano. Guitarist Jean Pierre Sasson is also on the session, and bass duties are shared by either Benoit Quersin or Pierre Michelot. There is also a very talented, but uncredited vibraphonist on this recording.
Although released on the Dot label, the record was manufactured by The Victor Record Co. Japanese characters appear on the back as well as on the insert with liner notes in Japanese.
This is a very rare record. I have been unable to find another one in my Google searches, let alone on Ebay. It is also a very beautiful record. with wonderfully rendered interpretations of standards (mostly ballads) by Thompson and band.  Thompson's warm breathy tone is very well recorded.
The record plays and sounds very good. There are no deep scratches, loud pops or skips. The vinyl is still very glossy and not overplayed, but there are quite a lot of surface scuffs that cause some audible surface noise, particularly on the quiet parts. I was tempted to grade it VG+, given it's age, but I will err on the side of caution.
The glossy paper cover has a split across the bottom and a stain in the bottom left corner (and right corner on the back). There are no markings. The labels are in great shape, with no tears or markings. The insert has a small stain in the same place as on the cover.
