Description
Most classic rock fans know the story of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Street Survivors album: released on October 17, 1977, only three days before the band's ill-fated plane crash. MCA recalled copies of the original "flames" cover (see 1st photo) and reissued the album with the band's photograph, minus the flames that instantly brought their terrible plane crash to mind.
Beyond the tale of the recall, Street Survivors was a landmark album, quickly hitting gold and eventually double platinum, and featuring classic songs that still receive Classic Rock airplay today, almost 50 years later: "What's Your Name" and "That Smell" in particular.
The story behind this particular sealed copy goes like this: my father and my two uncles were partners in a Tucson record store from the early 1970s through the early 2010s, and my dad saved a number of collectible records back in the day - many of them factory sealed, like this one. In this particular case, I'm guessing once they received notice of the recall from either MCA directly or their distributor, my dad stashed away several brand new, sealed copies of Street Survivors, thinking that perhaps they might be a collector's item someday. (To be clear, this eBay listing is for one of those copies of Street Survivors.) All of those saved albums were boxed up and stashed away for decades until about a year ago when I took ownership of them.
