1967 Original first pressing ....The final album of an (unintentional) trilogy, Crusade is most notable for the appearance of a very young teenaged, pre-Rolling Stones Mick Taylor on lead guitar. Taylor's performance is indeed the highlight, just as Eric Clapton and Peter Green's playing was on the previous album. The centerpiece of the album is a beautiful instrumental by Taylor titled "Snowy Wood," which, while wholly original, seems to combine both Green and Clapton's influence with great style and sensibility.

Eric Clapton in. Eric Clapton out. Peter Green in. Peter Green out. Mick Taylor in…. Being asked to play in the Bluesbreakers was like being on a non-stop merry-go-round. The studio must have been fitted with revolving doors. When you consider the band also saw Mick Fleetwood briefly pass through their ranks (here heard on bonus tracks "Double Trouble" and "It Hurts Me Too") and that he, Green and John McVie – who plays bass throughout Crusade – would use the Bluesbreakers as a springboard to form the original Fleetwood Mac, there can be no hesitation about naming John Mayall as the premier figure for nurturing great blues rock talent in the sixties. Taylor may not be in the same class as either Clapton or Green but listen to his work on such tracks as the instrumentals "Snowy Wood" and "Driving Sideways" you'd be hard pressed to believe he was only eighteen or that he was the same Mick Taylor who would become an integral part of The Rolling Stones during the most artistically productive period of their careers. Then again compare Taylor's more heavy handed approach to that of the more dexterous and emotive Peter Green on the aforesaid "Double Trouble" and the differences are readily apparent.

Crusade is superbly crafted following pretty much the same formula as the two previous albums – a mixture of blues standards and Mayall originals. The former are passionately inspired takes – "Oh Pretty Woman", "My Time After A While", "Driving Sideways", "Me And My Woman", "I Can't Quit You Baby", "Checkin' Up On My Baby".

Of the originals "Tears In My Eyes" sounds so good it could have been written by one of the greats while "The Death Of J.B. Lenoir" about the virtually unnoticed demise of one of Mayall's favourite bluesmen is Crusade's pivotal moment. In disgust at Lenoir's lack of recognition in the music press, Mayall fumes in the cover notes about the shoddy way the blues in general is treated and calls upon all afficionados to rally to the cause – hence the title of the album.
