On an extensive field trip, the French journalist Henri Clérisse recorded music
in Madagascar in 1939. He was accompanied by ethnologist Raymond Decary.
In 1946 the 'Musée de l'Homme' in Paris published 60 of the recordings on a series of 30
discs. This is one of them. One side is music of the Befandriana tribe recorded at
Tsimiheti in Madagascar. The other one is a male solo by a Majunga man, recorded
on Anjouan, the largest Comoro island, off Madagascar.
The Comoro singer is accompanied by a 'viele', which in this case may be a 2- or 3-string
violin, drums and cymbals. Such primitive violins are still used today in modern
'twarab' music.
