Description
This is a terrific compilation from Cornwall in Southwest England. While quite a lot has been written about the record of the years no-one has quite solved the whole mystery of who the bands are. I recall when the LP was originally issued in 1976 and, having a head for the minutiae of such things, I remembered there being an American band involved who briefly made their base in the county. They were a group of Seventh Day Adventists (hence my use of the term Xian in the listing) and I believe the contributed to the LP with two songs: one credited to Gershom Time Band and the other as Fresh Air. All attempts by me to find out more have failed.
The record is mainly sought-after because of the involvement of HARVEY BAINBRIDGE and MARTIN GRIFFIN and their association with HAWKWIND, HAWKLORDS and SONIC ASSASSINS.
For what it's worth here's a basic run-down: TOUCH THE EARTH Sunny Days (T T E were a local band formed by RICHARD WORTHY after his pioneering pub-rock CHARLIE & THE WIDEBOYS had split). There's more of their material in the can, good-time West Coast flavoured music which I hope will eventually get released. PHEASANT PLUCKERS Pete's Hoedown (Blugrass outfit from Plymouth, Devon - Pete Orgill had been in ASGARD who cut a prog LP on the Moody Blues Threshold label) ARK Living in Comfort (Band from North Devon with Harvey Bainbridge, Martin Griffin and Paul HGayles who DAVE BROCK from HAWKWIND adopted to become THE SONIC ASSASSINS) - some killer fuzz guitar on this track CRUISER Life's a Party (Cornish band in the Doobie Brothers vein) GERSHOM TIME BAND Home (The American band referred to above) This track is very reminiscent of the spacier moments on Merrell Fankhauser's 1976 Maui LP# DAMIEN & THE BELLRINGERS Firelight in Eden (Simon FRASER of CHARLIE & THE WIDEBOYS backed-up by Cruiser PAIR OF ACES Sailor (Richard Worthy of Touch The Earth was one part of the duo, I have no idea of the other) FRESH AIR Hold On (I believe this to be some of, if not all of, the people from Gershom Time Band) REG MEUROSS with ARK When go (Reg was an excellent North Devon singer-songwriter, backed up here by Bainbridge, Griffin and Co) DAMIEN & THE BELLRINBGERS Magic is no Mystery (Simon Fraser with Cruiser again)
