Well, well, well, what do we have here?…(insert a moment of stunned silence here so that I can regain my breath). I don't know what is more surreal: listening to this music, or simply staring at the cover. Here she is, circa 1966, in all her geriatric glory, playing the role of an , um… somewhat shelf-life-expired sex symbol gone limp (oh, as things go, this is quite OK: for, Mae West would ultimately go even further in the twilight zone of her life:  namely, some ten years later, she went on to make an X-rated soft-porn flick, when she was almost ready to meet her maker – we kid you not!!!),  and replete with happy-birthday-Mr-President-tight-around-the-cellulitic-buttocks-and-about-to-burst-open-any-second-now evening gold lame dress gown, replete with feather boa and Jayne Mansfield-meets-Sarah Palin platinum blonde beehive wig. No, ladies and gentleman, this Devil DEFINITELY did not wear Prada ™ (or, for that matter, much else). Frankly, I doubt that she could breathe in that outfit, which probably explains her rigid, frozen-stiff, is-it-live-or-is-it-Memorex posture and facial expression. I still don’t know if this was really she on the cover, or a Madam Tussaud’s wax figure doubling as Mae.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this, then is MISS MAE WEST, in person, ta-dah!!  (imagine  here the sights and sounds of heavens breaking open, red carpets being rolled, fanfares announcing, the crowds genuflecting, the seas parting and the rose petals being thrown at the wrinkled Venus arising from the seashell)!!!

Think of this album as a cringe-inducing incarnation of Isis as a senior-citizen nymphomaniac. Miss West is surrounded here by a bunch of adolescent boys holding instruments (presumably, the backing band) who look visibly dumbfounded, petrified and/or awestruck (sure, who wouldn't be? I mean, I would go comatose in an instant!)

Oh…I forgot…the music. Well, here's where the things get to improve a bit. Miss West had a voice, which, unlike her bust, was somewhat skimpy, wimpy, limpy and gelatinous , but it does a fairly decent job for the purpose of this recording. No, she could never be confused for Maria Callas,  but she had a survivable voice bordering on self-parody. The best part of the whole thing is the backup band. In the mid-60's this group of musicians (too bad, they are anonymous and are not credited on cover) provided musical beef to this whole stew. This band provides a wonderfully capable and competent garage-rock style backing for all tracks in the album, and the legendary Tower label's garage-style recording a la Chocolate Watch Band leaves nothing to be desired. The sound is replete with cheesy Farfissa / Vox organs and fuzz-drenched guitars, and is raw, punchy and rollicking --- just as, no doubt, Miss West always wanted ‘em.

Mae West covers a range of deep-soul, r&r (she was rockin’ before Rock was invented, alright!), rockabilly and garage classics of the 1960's and late 1950's (at least on this count her judgment didn't fail her miserably). This is Psychedelic experience at its most corny and surreal. Miss it now, and you will, no doubt, be spanked by Miss West herself if / when you get to meet her one day in some parlor-not-exactly-in-the-sky. Track Listing: Day Tripper --- Treat Him Right --- When a man loves a woman --- If you gotta go --- You turn me on --- Shakin' all over --- and others…and oh, lest I forget...the album has been out of print on any format in almost 42 years…why, oh, why, one wonders?!?

In short, a true, genuine drekadelic CLASSIC!  Watch our, folks, the Sexosaurus is on the prowl!!!

Even in the mid-'60s, all it took to score a record deal was an enormous rack. Never mind that the bosoms in question belonged to 74-year-old Mae West. On Way Out West the fossilized fox purrs and coos her way through the rock & roll songs those goddamn kids are all listening to these days, delivering renditions of "Day Tripper," "Twist and Shout," and "Shakin' All Over" slathered in her trademark sexpot shtick. In fact, she often disregards the actual lyrics in favor of her classic big-screen catch phrases. Her backing band, the otherwise unknown Somebody's Chyldren, proves surprisingly adept, creating energetic, raw garage rock rave-ups with a ring of authenticity rare among budget-label cash-ins of this type. Still, this is West's show, and if you've ever yearned to hear a saucy septuagenarian rock out, then Way Out West is the album for you.

(b)          The album comes with its original poster intact (still tucked in under the shrink wrap)

(c)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 2:1.

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
