The main claim to fame of the Magic Lanterns, besides the 1869 hit single "Shame Shame," was the inclusion of later soon-to-be star Albert Hammond as a bandmember -- and Black Sabbath lead vocalist Ozzy Osbourne allegedly played bass with the group as well. Over the course of the band's career between 1968-1971, the Magic Lanterns released three albums in their native U.K. with only one being released in North America on the Atlantic label. This CD version contains highlights from all three albums, including the hit "Shame Shame" from the album of the same name. Despite the CD's liner notes claiming otherwise, Ozzy still denies he was part of this band.

Before he became a Lucifer incarnate, Ozzy was (it was alleged, but never proven) a member of this wear-some-flowers-in-your-hair combo from the UK with the weak spot for melodic, hummable tunes and popsy, flowery arrangements. They sound like a cross between Badfinger, Partridge Family and Blood,Sweat & Tears with a pinch of blue-eyed soul ala Righteous Brothers (sans the great voices). The images of Paranoids, Bloody Sabbaths, Iron Men and alike apparently were not on Ozzy's mind just yet.

(c)             The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
