Maitreya Kali (real name believed to be Craig Smith) left behind two of the rarest and most unusual
private pressings from the California rock scene. Apparently a young man of considerable wealth with more than
a passing interest in rock music, these two albums are collections of recordings he financed from the mid-60s
to approximately 1971. Being without much in the way of liner notes or recording dates, much of what is known
about the artist and the music on offer has been deduced from the arcane cryptology on the records.
All that aside, these are amazing records that should not be missed by anyone interested in sixties music.
Not all of the material is of the same quality, but the earlier-sounding tracks on each album are mindblowing.
These were made with a small, well-rehearsed rock band.Color Fantasy and Voodoo Spell from Apache are
obviously vintage '60s recordings and are the high point of the first release, the former having top-notch
production values and being a swirling mass of treated guitars and trippy vocals
