Label Conditions: Both in superb condition, totally age defying and fresh. Intense rich colour retained and any spindle marks are few, light and faint. This is a 46-year-old mono record that looks hardly played.

Cat Number: TL 5377.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 165 grams. A vast weight for any standard record, this is very thick and heavy.

Rarity: The album itself is scarce, in this condition, rare. What sets this copy apart, apart from the amazing condition of the record is, this original includes the much rarer ‘Locomotive’ cover that was changed quickly to the ‘Alcove’ cover. The more common version sees the band standing in a building alcove. Only the original album briefly featured the band with the steam locomotive which is a gorgeous sleeve making the replacement look very dulll and uninteresting. These are seldom seen or offered.

Brief Info: A very successful and popular RnB band of the 1960s who had a string of quality hit singles. After the departure of Paul Jones, a new vocalist was recruited in Michael D’Abo, the only hit single on this album however was a cover of Dylan’s ‘Just Like a Woman’. Many consider this Fontana period to their very best culminating in the conceptual classic ‘Mighty Garvey’. This copy includes the rare original cover, known as the ‘locomotive’ cover, also in very fine condition. This is the very first one of these I have had to offer on Ebay and they show up very infrequently. The very heavy pressed record is superb and has survived the mono era beautifully – this is a rare opportunity.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate. This wraps around the closed edges and ends on three external rear flipbacks. Printed and made in England with full Fontana copyright text. As can be seen, this is far rarer ‘Locomotive’ cover.

Lamination & Front: Magnificent artwork which can be enjoyed practically to full on this still very shiny front. Quite why this cover was (or had to be) changed, I do not know – that being totally honest. But for sure, the replacement was pretty boring in comparison. The laminate is fresh, clear and devoid of lifting – even under angled light, there is barely any hint of friction rubs or dulling. There is a little laminate creasing – one near the top right corner, a couple on the lower right corner. Two even lesser ones on the bottom and left edges – these show little. The odd tiny chip and any other creases are few and very faint hairline types. A rare cover in very pleasing condition.

Cover Back: The back a little more aged, but for a cover this huge age, this is very nice indeed. Most of any grubbiness is on the extreme left (entrance) edge, any other lighter and little. A possible tiny split on the left edge or a fine crease – either way, it shows little and it is not split now. The three flipbacks are very neat indeed with any burring to the ends minimal and light. These are all solid and undamaged with just a few fine laminate creases. The main unprotected back panel shows little rubbing or wear – just aged enough to give hints of it’s vintage, I for one, can see no problem with that.

Top Edge: A white edge with a light scuff near the centre that shows little.

Bottom Edge: Barely any wear up to the right corner tip that has a smallish rub.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly quite sharp with any thickening or burring light. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid and reasonably straight with a little mildish compression. All text is perfect and unworn however, under the solid and unpeeled laminate which is nicely centred.

Corners: The right pair have tip rubbing, the left little at all. A couple have small tip creases. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: An overall strong example of this, my first ever ‘Locomotive’ cover. Not quite good enough for the highly discerning collector, but finding this at all is never easy and this really does still look attractive. A little light ageing and fairly light creases on a cover from 1966 is more than acceptable I feel and it will take an exceptional one to better it. Certainly one to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: mainly marked down a little for moderate age darkening which few inners this age avoid. A plain white, polylined inner with two immaculate crisp windows and very clear, minimal crinkled lining. One window edge split has been neatly repaired. Light to moderate corner crease – these often done to hold the record inside – and all edges unsplit with no repairs here. This is British patented and with British and Other Patents Pending text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, faint and very fine, an exceptional record from the mono age and few available ones will better it. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very well preserved record plays up to and most all even exceeds it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. No heavy tracking old mono record players have ruined this one and even on a highly clinical stereo turntable and equipment, this gives nigh-on it’s full best. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with no ‘mono’ crackle or single channel sound, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
