Label/Format: Vertigo – original full swirl format and big spiral logo on the side two, these have matt smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only two or three very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Side one’s full swirl is immaculate from rim to hole with no chips. Side two still very white and unaged with no grubbiness or fingermarks. They hardly get much better than this. A superb all-round copy of this now very elusive spiral album.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A very good solid weight for this original.

Rarity: Very Scarce: and seldom seen in this clean, impressive condition. Indeed, the record looks hardly played and sounds fantastic. The very wear-prone cover has few blemishes either.

Brief Info: The second of two albums for Chapter Three (III on the label), both on the Vertigo Spiral label, then disbanding to form the prog-rock Earth Band. Chapter III made very different music: heavy jazz-rock with a clear Miles Davis and John Coltrane improvised, almost free-form sound. With rasping reeds and a heavy somewhat uncommercial sound, neither album sold well and this one in particular the harder one to find as an original. This is a superb copy with a lovely little-worn cover and the record very little played and offering amazing clear and fully focused sound – never an easy task with such full-on complex sound – this is high-intensity jazz-rock. A single play of this on a worn or chipped stylus could have destroyed the focus of this highly complex and loudly recorded album, not the case here, this sounds magnificent and quite similar to the Keith Tippett album ‘Dedicated to You…’ on the same label. For fans of heavy jazz-rock and massed horn blowing, this is for you. The best copy I have yet seen as well.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably undergraded as such, this looks MUCH better in real terms. A couple of small blemishes and this grading being very conservative. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Howards and includes the swirl inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Like practically all in this legendary Vertigo spiral series, this is clearly highly prone to all forms of wear, but this is a very attractive example with little. The front especially here is the best I have ever seen bar none. Ultra clean, fresh and attractive, the dolls artwork looks fantastic. Viewed with utmost scrutiny under angled light, a tiny few super-fine hairline traces are seen and there is a mere hint of a fine bottom left corner tip crease. That’s about it really, the lack or rubbing, creasing, sticker issues, grubbiness and ageing makes for an exceptional example.and it will never prove easy to find better.

Cover Back: The back overall is similar with a couple of small blemishes, namelhy a tiny surface pull to the top left corner as can be clearly seen on my picture – this really is very small indeed. Also a scuff-rub on the bottom left corner, this is relatively small as well. Again under light, a few more ultra fine hairline surface marks are seen – and I do mean hairline – with normal full-on viewing they are practically invisible. Little else to fault on what is still a superb back. The lack of ringwear is a massive plus as is the lack of creasing, rim impression or wear.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Apart from a gentle small light crease on the bottom centre fold, this is practically mint as made and looks fantastic.

Top Edges: One small chip on the back edge is the only thing of any real note. Both straight with barely any rubbing at all – quite outstanding really.

Bottom Edges: These are hugely impressive, storage edges for non-laminates rarely escape like this. Any rubbing bordering on minuscule, also straight and clean.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real edge that is folded and tucked, this straight with any rubbing minuscule. The back entrance is clean, crisp and mostly very sharp with barely any hint of thickening at all. As mentioned above, just the very small rub on the back corner. Record enters on this back edge.

Spine and Text: Again, immensely impressive – again this crucial area rarely escapes without often major wear. Solid, straight with barely even a hint of compression. Also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is pristine, how often can this ever be stated? Even the folds retain all ink with no scuffs, just a tiny rub near the very bottom end. Lastly for good measure, this is unfaded, that again quite unusual, often Vertigo cover spines are bleached out by natural light for which they do not tolerate well.

Corners: Mostly very small tip rubs, the one exception mentioned already. Also the odd small tip crease, but very fine to mostly excellent (or better) shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this scarce and vulnerable early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. Compared to others and similar items seen, this is substantially above the norm or average, even with a couple of minor small blemishes. Not seen or offered often these days, this impressive overall item should please many, if not indeed most collectors. Indeed, it could even prove a substantial upgrade for many.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the Spiral inner is polylined and clear, as seen through two crisp and very neat window circles. Mildly aged with the usual seam edge darkening, but the lack of creasing and general very neat appearance also makes this above average. A couple of very neat repairs (by myself) to edge splits was made to stop them potentially widening in the future – these hardly even register, but any such actions will always be mentioned.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very fine, light and faint as seen more critically under bright angled light. These purely whispy fine hairlines – most being even finer – and no penetrating scratches at all. Albums of this age seldom will be found a great deal better, this is a real beauty for looks and sound. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This challenging and complex record plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Full-on production with dynamic rasping reeds is the order of the day, and all are crisp and focused with no clipping or sound degrading. Such recordings especially intolerant of older heavy tracking record players, this sounds really impresisve and I am certain has never been subjected to such treatment. Any surface traces barely registering and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this first issue pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive Spiral album. This has always proved the harder of the two Chapter III albums to find and finding it better will be beyond difficult. A lovely all-round example that merits my highest recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
