Label Conditions: Both IMMACULATE: truly this pair practically remind of new. Ultra clean, fresh and attractive with no discernable spindle marks or traces at all. This a copy time (and the previous one only owner), overlooked.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 156 grams. A heavyweight pressing more typical from an era of quality.

Rarity: Scarce: and rare in such fabulous condition. Stereo copies even more elusive and finding this gem better could prove near impossible.

Brief Info: A late soundtrack album by this popular 1960s band, but surprisingly, this one failed to chart, hence elusive and seldom seen in such amazing condition. An excellent album in age-defying condition. Although never definitive, the labels suggest this has hardly been played and the playing surfaces reitterate this still further. The film proved more popular than the album in commercial terms, it featured a young Dennis Waterman (as now regularly seen on ‘New Tricks’), who became a very popular television actor in the UK. The songs are catchy and enjoyable and this could easily be another non-soundtrack Manfred Mann album. I regard this a mini 60s gem, unfairly overlooked and under-appreciated, most fans of the era will love this one and such is the condition of both record and cover, it could prove a substantial upgrade for many collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): but where is the minus?, I am asking myself. I have rarely been more tempted to grade a 45-year-old as full Mint ever and quite honestly this is as close as they will ever get. A single cover with front laminate. This covers all closed folds and ends on three large rear external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and unprotected. I have seen this cover without laminate, but with it, it exudes far more class and stunning good looks. Printed and made in England but uncredited.

Cover Front: Little short of immaculate with the laminate simply gleaming with freshness. It has a mirror-like shine and clarity with no lifting. Even under angled light, no friction rubs or dulling whatsoever. The only tiny blemish off pure perfection is a very faint hint of a thumb semi-crease on the right edge, and that minor ‘flaw’ (if deemed as such), stopped the full Mint grading. The artwork is pristine, the white is still pure and totally untoned or aged. This cover is up there with the very best from this era I have ever seen.

Cover Back: The back is equally impressive: the main panel is a shade darker than pure white and I am pretty sure it is how they were made. Any rim impression is ultra faint near the top edge, also bare in mind, this has had a 150+ gram record inside for 45 years. Rub and grime-free and the three flipbacks are immaculate as new. Still pure white with crisp unburred ends that have no grimeline formation of wear at all. Absolutely amazingly, not even a single hairline on the laminate on all three, this cover goes beyond beautiful and one for the connoisseur.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both are ultra clean with no wear or scuffs, still perfectly smooth to the touch and as straight as they will ever be found.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Again incredibly clean and sharp with any thickening or burr traces almost minuscule as seen critically viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The fine exposed strip where the laminate ends short is pristine and white with no grubbiness whatsoever.

Spine and Text: Pristine Mint: absolutely as made, solid, very straight, uncompressed with all text perfect and unworn, also near perfectly centred on a fairly narrow depth. The surface again super-smooth and totally devoid of any creasing, cracking or peeling. They simply do not get better.

Corners: All near perfect again. Barely any hint of wear, no dinks with lovely well-defined pointed shape retained.

Cover Summary: If only all vintage covers could be in this quite stunning condition. One that gives no clues to it’s considerable vintage at all. This beauty should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and in terms of real wear, barely any at all. Only marked down for natural darkening of the paper. A Polydor inner sleeve with two immaculate window circles and ultra clear lining with minimal crinkle. Hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) to MINT(-): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with a super shine, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy that appears very little played, and when so, with utmost care. Any surface traces ultra fine and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lesser-seen Manfred Mann album plays up to it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal with just the odd sporadic gentle tick noted here and there within the pressing. In terms of a record this great age, few will even get close to it. All experienced collectors will know the perils these old records faced from heavy, often interior tipped pick-ups from the era. Although this is a stereo copy, it still would not have meant it could not have been played on a crude mono record player, but for sure, this one was NOT. Few survive that will play with ‘perfect’ sound, but this gives it a real good go, this too on a highly revealing LP12 front-end. Both channels are clean and sharp with no crackle at all. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove beyond difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. As stated above, both record and cover could prove substantial upgrades for collectors.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
