MARC BRIERLEY – Welcome To The Citadel ORIG CBS LP // S 63478 (UK, Stereo, 1968)
Here’s the very rare debut long player from Marc Brierley and what an impressive recording it is – similar in parts to Bill Fay’s sound around this time and with stellar musicianship from Henry & Clare Lowther, Tony Reeves & Mike Travis. Sadly, this copy hasn’t been well looked after, it plays OK (pretty well, actually) but visually (particularly Side 2) is not the prettiest looking disc. PLEASE BEAR THIS IN MIND BEFORE BIDDING!
The front-laminated single format sleeve is pleasing - particularly the seminal front panel artwork by Ron Henderson, which must rank as one of the great psychedelic paintings of the era. A handful of light creases here. Slightly softened corners. Some grubbiness to the rear. Edges, top and bottom are still strong and the spine has survived well with all text legible (see photo). NO writing. NO tears or rips. All in one piece and the front artwork still looks great. Would be close to EX if it wasn’t for the slightly dirty rear so I’ll go a solid VG (Very Good). Still lies flat without rippling or warping.
The labels are also VG, no writing, stickers or other damage but quite a bit of spindle evidence around the middle hole.
The vinyl, as aforementioned, shows several marks, some feelable, small scratches, hairlines and scuffing. This is more predominant on Side 2 which looks rough. Visually, I’ll grade it G (Good) for Side 1 and F (Fair) for Side 2.
IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO THROUGHOUT and in spite of the marking the overall play is satisfying. Note that there is little in the way of constant crackle but expect ticks here and there and the following audio faults: S1/T3 – one example of a ‘whooshing’ click., S1/T5 – repeated clicks (around 2 dozen), S2/T1 – some surface noise, S2/T5 – crackle and clicks. THERE WERE NO JUMPS OR STICKING and many tracks play without too much hindrance but it’s obviously not a perfect sounding disc.
A very rare UK psych-folk landmark which would serve as a good filler, still serviceable, until a better (and more expensive!) copy comes along.
