AN UNPLAYED COPY OF THIS MEGA RARE GOSPEL 78 FROM MARIAN WILLIAMS

b/w I CAN'T FORGET (Beautiful Gospel Ballad)
Marion Williams was born in Miami, Florida, to a religiously devout mother and musically inclined father. She left school when she was nine years old to help support the family, and worked as a maid, a nurse, and in factories and laundries. She began singing in front of auiences while young. As was common in the area, Williams learned African-American blues and jazz, alongside Caribbean calypso. Poverty caused Williams to leave school at fourteen, working with her mother at a laundry. She was singing at church and on street corners, inspired by a wide range of musicians, including Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the Smith Jubilee Singers. She stuck with gospel in spite of pressure to switch to popular blues tunes or the opera.
Generally considered one of the most influential Gospel singers of all time, Marion Williams sung with a full-body growl so intense that anyone who wants to dispute her right to the title had better bring along a megaphone and some throat lozenges. The other side of her style -- soul-shattering falsettos and anointed, exclamatory whoops -- had a direct effect on Little Richard, for one, as well as countless others in both Gospel and secular music circles. From 1948 to 1958 she was the central figure in the ever-touring Ward Singers, stunning audiences with the high-test stage-show/revival meeting and a larger-than-life presence that has made her a legend. A stint with the short-lived Stars of Faith followed, and in 1965 she launched a solo career that was marked by comeback after comeback until her death in 1994.DISC DETAILS

THIS WAS THE FIRST ISSUE ON THE RENOWNED "GOSPEL" LABEL ISSUED BY SAVOY RECORDS CONDITION: NEAR MINT (UNPLAYED!) This is part of the consignment of Mint stock 78s that were brought over to the UK by Chris Barber over 35 years ago and have been langueshing in a Garage ever since. Storage conditions have not been ideal and there may be the odd blemish and very slight warping but the records have come straight out of their factory boxes in their original sleeves.
