Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate: ultra clean and highly attractive and they retain a genuine freshness that’s so unusual on this album. This being her most popular 60s title, and so often played into submission. These lovely labels have only two or three very light and faint spindle marks – this is simply a record of archive quality.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Scarce and rarely seen in such truly wonderful visual and playing condition. Most heavily played on vintage mono equipment that inflicted severe and often penetrating marks and groovewear. This record and cover are on the other side of the spectrum.

Brief Info: Marianne’s second UK Decca album and it proved to be her most popular. When she returned in the latter part of the 1970s, a very different sounding lady appeared with far more radical material, content and a totally different voice. This is my personal favourite from her early catalogue, the second of four issued on Decca and it sold fairly well. Another lovely record from the gentle pop-folk of the early Faithfull sound. This is a supreme all-round example too. The ultra flimsy cover has not only withstood the test-of-time – it has practically ignored it. The record itself plays perfectly – a bold statement I know from the mono era – but true – and never take this for granted. The vast majority of these I have seen have been heavily played with covered with marks and sometimes deep scratches. For fans needing this scarce record, it will prove beyond difficult to find better – this is a lifetime keeper copy and magnificent.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): grading this less would not being doing it justice. A single format, the front laminated with Clarifoil, this wraps around the closed edges but only on to the back via the spine. The top and bottom edges end into the inside back panel. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker Ltd.

Lamination & Front: One of the female faces of the swinging 60s and rarely will it be seen much better. This front truly does remind of new: such beauty and freshness is so rarely seen on a flimsy cover like this. The laminate has a superb shine and retains incredible clarity with absolutely NO friction rubs or dulling – even when viewed directly under angled light. Unusually on these early fragile Decca covers, this is fully adhered with no lifting or blistering at all, that makes a huge difference to the visual excellence. Barely any creasing either with just ultra fine half moon trace away from the edges and even the sides themselves have barely any either. Also any traces of rim impression are minuscule and quite honestly, I cannot even imagine finding a better front on this cover, or even one quite like it again, this is a remarkable sight – and never forget it’s considerable age.

Cover Back: Unprotected and very vulnerable but again this has stood the test of time well. This sleeve has been superbly preserved and looked after, I doubt if it has seen light for decades and the record the same. The original price of 32/2 (32 shillings and twopence – that is approximately £1.61) is written neatly in pencil near the top edge – this would rub off easily with no trace, but that I feel would be sacrilege as any original reference to pre-decimal pricing is an historic reference of the album’s past and era. The card has minimal darkening or ageing with just a little faint toning near the top edge but no grubbiness. Barely a crease or edge burr to be seen at all, no ringwear and the end-line of the laminate on the spine edge ultra clean and practically mint. Even this retains a rich shine and unyellowed. Simply a fantastic front and back.

Top Edge & Bottom Edges: Barely any wear at all, any thickening of the rear panel is tiny and faint. No dead straight but fairly close. Clarifoil laminate does naturally contract and often draws in the cover – better that than lifting away from the cover, and here these edges are almost as straight as they ever get. The bottom edge is practically as made and totally scuff-free, storage edges seldom escape quite like this.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Razor sharp and clean with barely any hint of wear, thickening or burring. This too is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Often these early thin card Decca covers suffer tears and laminate end grubbiness, but not this one. The thin strip on the front entrance edge is near immaculate. A small natural ‘wave’ is seen near the top of the front edge when viewed end-on, again a minor trait of laminate contraction and near impossible to avoid to some light degree. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with any compression tiny and very minor. The ends are tapered in manufacture and retain excellent shape. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate that has no cracking, creasing or peeling. Ultra smooth to the fingertip with no scuffs at all. A little mild natural ‘bowing’ again due to the laminate tightening, totally normal – something has to give – and with full adhesion retained, this is unusual and better. Remember, this is very thin card.

Corners: All hugely impressive with barely any tip rubbing and excellent plus to near mint shape retained.

Cover Summary: A STUNNING all-round example of this very fragile 1960’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better – this really does lay down the gauntlet. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors and is my very best example ever bar none.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): this vintage lined inner is also superb. Any ageing or discolouration minor and light. A true mono inner with no reference to stereo alternatives. The lining is very clear with minimal crinkle as seen through two immaculate window circles. Any crinkle or creasing few and light and all edges unsplit with no repairs. A near perfect inner as you would expect when the record has hardly ever made the trip outside.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): very clean with super shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. When records have clearly not been used hardly at all, the fear of bag-rash becomes an issue – glad to state, there is none present on these impressive playing surfaces. Finding 1965 mono records a great deal better will never prove easy and this has been supremely well-looked after with no penetrating scratches or sound degrading whatsoever. In fact even under bright angled light, finding any surface blemishes or fine hairlines is not easy – the odd traces but this gorgeous piece of pop history has simply been ignored by the one original owner and his record player. Remember, just one jolt or arm drop from a very heavy tracking Dansette or similar record player of the era, would mean a deep scratch or crator inflicted on any delicate surface. This copy has avoided such trauma and almost reminds of new – I just wish I could find all mono records like this. A record not really made for high end stereo equipment, but when found like this, they are thing of genuine beauty. Visually magnificent – a record time has forgotten and ignored – most discerning collectors will treasure this.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A delicate album, but this quality mono record plays up to and even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Her vocals have a lovely crisp and natural sound and this is a polished sounding record. A little miking sibilance on the recording is present which, to be absolutely clear, is totally correct and natural. Every copy is the same of course. No surface sounds, pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, as you would expect from Decca of course. Few copies will match let alone outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has hardly been played, handled or exposed to daylight. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, always a delight to hear such an old record sounding so clean and impressive. This too played on a very revealing LP12 turntable for which this record was not really designed. This copy will prove beyond difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation and accolades.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
