Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive and retain a genuine freshness that’s so unusual on this album. This being her most popular 60s title, and so often played into submission. These lovely labels have only two or three very light and few spindle marks – I have seen none better on this title.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Scarce and rarely seen in such fine visual and playing condition. Most heavily played on vintage mono equipment that inflicted severe and often penetrating marks and groovewear.

Brief Info: Marianne’s second UK Decca album and it proved to be her most popular. When she returned in the latter part of the 1970s a very different sounding lady appeared with far more radical material, content and a totally different voice. This is my personal favourite from her early catalogue, the second of four issued on Decca and it sold fairly well. Another lovely record from the gentle pop-folk of the early Faithfull sound. This is a strong all-round example too. The ultra flimsy cover has also withstood the test-of-time well with only some mildish ageing of the back. The record itself plays very well and never take this for granted. The vast majority of these I have seen have been heavily played with covered with marks and sometimes deep scratches. For fans needing this scarce record, it will prove difficult to find substantially better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being somewhat critical. A single format, the front laminated with Clarifoil, this wraps around the closed edges but only on to the back via the spine. The top and bottom edges end into the inside flaps. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker Ltd.

Lamination & Front: One of the female faces of the swinging 60s and rarely will it be seen much better. The laminate has a lovely shine and sheen and retains very fine clarity with barely even a hint of any friction rubs or dulling. Unusually on these early flimsy Decca covers, this is fully adhered with no lifting or blistering at all. Barely any creasing either with just three very fine and faint surface ones near the right edge centre – they hardly even show with normal viewing. Any hint of record rim impression so slightly, it is barely worthy of mention. This front on it’s own grades Mint(-), my highest grading.

Cover Back: Unprotected and very vulnerable but again this has stood the test of time well. Some mildish toning around the perimeters with some mild toning and odd mark near the bottom edge. No rubbing or penetrating ringwear and only slightly darkened with age. The lack or creasing again is noteworthy. A very mild trace of burring to the top panel end. The back graphics shows Marianne in the studio at various times during recording. Overall this back looks lovely and just right for it’s considerable age. Personally, I think a little gentle ageing enhances beauty.

Top Edge: This has been constructed very neatly and there is little wear at all. The actual fold is crisp, laminated and unworn. The back panel end is almost as good as they get too.

Bottom Edge: Barely any wear at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any hint of wear, any thickening or burr traces minuscule. Often these early thin card Decca covers suffer tears but not this one. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with only a little mild compression near the centre. The ends are tapered in manufacture and retain excellent shape. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate that has just one fine and faint central surface crack, it barely even shows and I am being ultra critical now.

Corners: All very impressive with barely any tip rubbing and excellent or better shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: this vintage Polylined Decca inner has darkened a little and the original owner put an encircled ‘20’ on the back top right corner. The window circles are very neat indeed and the lining quite clear with a little crinkle. Some mildish creasing and very small tear on the top opening of back, all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. It does have a few light and faint surface marks seen more under angled light but still a very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Finding 1965 mono records a great deal better will never prove easy and this overall has been well-looked after with no penetrating scratches or sound degrading. Remember, just one jolt or arm drop from a very heavy tracking Dansette or similar record player of the era, would mean a deep scratch or crator inflicted on any delicate surface. This copy has avoided such trauma and any minor surface blemishes I consider normal with modest and generally careful usage. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A delicate album, but this quality mono record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Her vocals have a lovely crisp and natural sound and this is a polished sounding record. Few surface sounds and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, as you would expect from Decca of course. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played lightly and generally carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, always a delight to hear such an old record sounding so clean and impressive. This too played on a very revealing LP12 turntable for which this record was not really designed. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
