PIGFOOT PETE
b/w I AIN'T GONNA BE NO TOPSEY
b. 1919, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, d. 23 May 1978, Los Angeles, California, USA.
Marie Bryant was one of the most popular Black exotic dancer of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Her sexy dancing had lots of culture and class with wowing costumes to top it. Films such as "The Duke Is Tops" and "Gang War" are the films that featured her dancing a sexy African dance. When her dancing career ended, she started a successful singing career appearing in many movies featuring her marvelous voice. She has many films which are available to her credit showcasing her multi-talents, she's one of the greats of Black Entertainment.
A good singer, with a pleasing vocal sound and stage presence, Bryant worked with several noted jazz artists in New York in the 40s. She appeared on record in 1946 in a band that included Peanuts Hucko and Bernie Leighton and, the same year, with Al Casey. In 1952, she recorded in London accompanied by the Mike McKenzie Quartet, which included Humphrey Lyttelton. Bryant is doubtless best remembered by jazz fans for her 1944 film appearance in the Norman Granz -Gjon Mili classic, Jammin’ The Blues.
It is not clear how she got into Calypso music and why she came over to England to record so many great sides - but she recorded some cracking sides for both Lyragon and the London Calypso labels.
