FORMAT : 10inch 78 (thin real vinyl, not shellac)

COVER CONDITION : GENERIC as issued.

VINYL CONDITION : VG+ quite nice, great gloss, but some marks. both un-attached & un-circulated labels are clean NM.

NOTES : hoping to advance the singing career of marilyn monroe, in 1954 RCA sent disc jockeys a promotional 78 rpm record with a large bright red question mark and the words WHO IS SHE? on the labels, which added these instructions: “she’s gorgeous… her name is a household word! you guess… ask your listeners to guess! answer in next week’s DJ kit.” remarkably, RCA had little confidence in 1954 that radio personalities, not to mention their audiences, could identify marilyn monroe as a pop singer. the “answer” arrived a week later in the form of two promo picture labels to be pasted over the red question mark labels. these new labels, issued to disc jockeys as promo only on this mystery air-quiz occasion, feature a great photo of marilyn, and identify the A and B sides as songs from the film river of no return - “i’m gonna file my claim” and “river of no return.” while copies turn up of the promo 78 in its final state, first state “?” copies are scarce, and nothing like this copy ever has been reported - a 1st state “?” disc with a pair of un-circulated pristine unused picture labels. marilyn monroe’s butcher cover.

- for grading i use : M / NM / NM- / EX / VG++ / VG+ / VG / VG- / F graded under bright bare-bulb direct light… unless there are specific mentions of audio quality please consider grading as visual only.
