Marissa Nadler Ballads Of Living And Dying Original 1st Edition LP Eclipse Still Sealed!

Original still sealed/Mint copy of the very rare and long OOP debut album from acid/folk songstress Marissa Nadler, released by Eclipse Records.  Nadler first came to notice as one of the wildcards on the Tom Rapp tribute put together by Secret Eye and as her inclusion there makes clear, she favours dark folk ballads that reach far into the blackest areas of space. Ballads Of Living And Dying is her first full-length outing and it’s a beauty. Her voice is pitched somewhere between the Paisley stylings of Kendra Smith and Hope Sandoval, with an edge of tremulous grace that means she also lines up nicely alongside UK folk singers like Shirley Collins and Sandy Denny. The back cover of the LP features some cryptic artwork that looks like a nod towards Current 93’s epochal Swastikas For Noddy album and references to other decadent fantasists and folkloric tropes dot the record, culminating in her setting of Edgar Allen Poe’s “Annabelle Lee” for acoustic and electric guitar. But it’s her own compositions that leave the heaviest afterimages in the air, with titles like “Stallions” and “Box Of Cedar” beautiful hybrids of dark-hearted Bert Jansch-style folk and drugged, weightless psych.
