Description
Original US pressing on the obscure Forward records label (ST-F-1007) from 1969/70. The cover is in excellent- condition (sticker damage in the top left corner, the sticker in the top right corner has been removed without damage) and the record is in near mint condition. With lyric insert.
Ego got the better of Markly so he called it Markley A Group, when really it's The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band Part Five, the last album)
So this is basically the FIFTH West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band LP, "Markley, A Group" on the obscure Forward label. Credited to Bob Markley this time, yet all the principle WCPAEB players are here - Bob, of course, Michael Lloyd, and Dan & Shawn Harris. It's also a giant step up from the disappointing 4th West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band LP "Where's My Daddy?", taking its musical cues and sound from the "Child's Guide to Good and Evil" album. I hear a lot of that album in "Next Plane to the Sun", co-written by Michael Lloyd, a very cosmic ethereal trippy psych track with quivery biting acid guitar leads and wailing spectres subbing for background vocalists. And the supremely stoned "Elegant Ellen" drifts through the same paisley-hued ether that enveloped the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band's "Smell of Incense" way back on their 2nd album. "Elegant Ellen, hardly eleven, sitting on her sister's chair...grounded at home, left all alone with no place to go. Soon some Saturday when she gets away, we'll walk through other people's minds...read between their lines, tell them what to do tomorrow." Sounds like a plan. The song ends with a breathtaking collage of layered vocals like a chorus of Tibetan monks. Fading Yellow psych pop fans will get the biggest rush from "Outside/Inside", a splendid orchestrated reworking of a track from "Where's My Daddy?", a jangly bit of upbeat baroque pop that's pure pop heaven. It skips along like a giddy schoolgirl on a childlike nursery rhyme melody, complete with sweeping orchestra and some bouncy harpsichord. It's a perfect encapsulation of summertime, like "Transparent Day" was for that other band. Oh, wait...the other band IS this band.
