JOHN CAGE AMORES I&  IV dedicated to  MARO AJEMIAN / Alan Hovhaness:Invocation to Vahakn I & IV w Alan Hovhaness Chinese Gong and Drums

First Hovhaness release: Disc 875 (1947)

The composer's first commercial release came in 1947 with the Disc label's 78rpm double 12-inch album of Hovhaness and John Cage piano works, featuring Hovhaness and Maro Ajemian as performers. Although Cage featured on this set, it was primarily a vehicle to promote Hovhaness, and George Avakian, Ajemian's brother-in-law, was instrumental in its recording and release.

Disc 1 featured the two-piano work Mihr: Ancient Armenian Fire God. Disc 2, side A featured Invocations to Vahakn, movements IV & V, whilst side B featured John Cage's Amores I and IV for prepared piano, played by Ajemian. On Invocations Hovhaness played Chinese gong and drum. The release contained a large fold-out poster with photographs and laudatory New York reviews of Hovhaness concerts.

Condition: EXCELLENT 3mm scratch end of INVOCTIONA, BUT record has tight crack through laminations on both sides.

Plays quiet w some crackly hiss, crack does not sound on Cage

DISC NEW YORK 12" 78 rpm record

Maro Ajemian (July 9, 1921 – September 18, 1978) was an American pianist. Ajemian's career in contemporary music got its impetus from her Armenian heritage; she became known as a contemporary pianist after performing the U.S. premiere of Aram Khachaturian's Piano Concerto, which she chose to play based on the fact that Khachaturian was Armenian.[1]

Ajemian studied at the Juilliard School of Music. On March 14, 1942, she gave the American premiere of Aram Khachaturian's Piano Concerto in D flat with the Juilliard Graduate Orchestra under Albert Stoessel.[2] She later performed the piece on a cross-country tour. Following her performances of the Piano Concerto, she began meeting contemporary composers, and together with her sister, the violinist Anahid Ajemian, she became known as a champion of new music, presenting the premieres of many new works by American composers.[3] Among these were John Cage, Alan Hovhaness, Henry Cowell, Ernst Krenek, Lou Harrison, and Gunther Schuller.
Cage dedicated his Sonatas and Interludes to her and she made the first recording of that piece.

Ajemian was particularly fond of the music of Hovhaness (a fellow Armenian American), and co-founded a New York City-based organization, the Friends of Armenian Music Committee, which promoted his music during the 1940s, presenting annual concerts in such high profile venues as Town Hall. These concerts were well reviewed by such critics as Lou Harrison, Virgil Thomson, and Olin Downes, and served to launch Hovhaness into the national spotlight.

She died of heart valve failure at the age of 57.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless another service is requested. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.

I charge actual postage plus a small fee for packing materials

As always, I guarantee your satisfaction. If you don't like the item, just return it, and I will refund the full purchase price.

Prices below are for regular 78 rpm records. Up to about 5 records, I will ship Edison Discs for the same rates. Albums from Album Sets count as 1 record. Above that and for international shipments, it will be actual weight plus a small packing charge (1-3$ depending on size of shipment)

1 record: 4.50 – 5.00$

2 records: 5.75$

5 records: 7.50$

10 records: 9.50$

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 30$.
