Description
A very nice-looking copy of a rare 45 by the Marquees. "Wyatt Earp " was released in 1957 as near as I can tell. a Top 20 hit in 1964 when reached #17 on the Pop Charts.
The following story about the Marquees is by Marv Goldberg and is based on Goldberg’s interview with first tenor Reese Palmer:
The Marquees were from the East Capitol Dwellings of Washington, D.C.: Reese Palmer (first tenor), Marvin Gay (second tenor/baritone; he'd change the spelling to "Gaye" later on, when he became a soloist), James Nolan (second tenor/baritone; formerly of the Red Robin/Pilgrim Rainbows), and Chester Simmons (bass; formerly of the Rama Rainbows). All but James had attended Cardozo High School.
On September 25, 1957 the Marquees journeyed to New York City, where they recorded four sides at the CBS Building on Broadway. Two of these were as the Marquees: "Wyatt Earp" and "Hey Little School Girl," both led by Reese Palmer ("I wrote them and I sang them"). They were backed up by the Bo Diddley band (Diddley's maracas player, Jerome Green, is quite prominent on "Hey Little School Girl"). They also backed up for Billy Stewart on "Billy's Heartaches" and "Baby, You're My Only Love."
After the session, Okeh decided that it didn't like the way Bo Diddley's band sounded on "Wyatt Earp." So on November 12, the Marquees returned to re-record the song using a studio band.
As enthusiastic as Okeh was at the beginning, that's how fast they lost interest in the group once the record was released. They did nothing to push it at all, and it quickly faded into obscurity. "It was a waste of time," says Reese.
I purchased these 45s on eBay several years ago with the intention of matting them with autographs I have collected of the respective artists for display purposes. I was more interested in clean labels than impeccable vinyl though they frequently go hand-in-hand. I collected the respective artists’ first record, first chart hit, top selling hit, etc. The cost of matting, however, proved to be too high, and I had to give up on this project.
PLEASE NOTE:
I have never played any of these records. I am not a dealer, but a collector attempting to pass my collection on to others. I am not, by any means, an expert when it comes to grading. What I can say is that these 45s have been inspected under a high intensity LED lamp. When viewed under normal lighting conditions, it is likely that the records would grade out higher. However, should you have a grading problem with any 45 you’ve purchased from me, simply let me know me and I will make it right.
ALL GRADING IS BASED SOLELY ON A VISUAL INSPECTION OF EACH 45
M = Absolutely new. If the 45 is not sealed, this rating is not used.
NM = No visible flaws on the vinyl. Label soiling and ring wear is negligible.
NM- or EX = Somewhere between VG+ and Near Mint. At most, 1 or 2 tiny and light hairlines or scuff lines.
VG+ = Vinyl has been well taken care of but will have a few very light hairlines or scuff lines. Maybe some other slight imperfections like a rub mark. There should be very little to no background/surface noise when playing this record.
VG = Vinyl will have several light scratches or hairlines that range from light to moderate. There may be background/surface noise while playing. Still a nice record but you might expect some crackles and pops.
VG- = Somewhere between VG and G.
G = Vinyl will have many scratches and scuffs with significant surface noise upon playing. This type of scratches will be very evident but should not cause any skipping during play.
Those 45s that needed it have been cleaned with “Lasermedia VNC-8 Professional Vinyal Record Cleaning Fluid.”
