Martha Reeves' reedy, vibrant soprano could bring life to the comatose. …The exciting "Heat Wave" stills sound as fresh as ever, Thomas "Beans" Bowles' distinctive sax is like a third voice cutting with Martha's, along with the unmistakable voices of Annette Beard and Rosalind Ashford on the earlier cuts. Banging tire chains give added bottom to "Dancing in the Street," originally designed for Kim Weston, as was "My Baby Loves Me," where the Vandellas are replaced by the Andantes, with added help from the Four Tops, on the jazziest tune Reeves ever recorded. Both tunes were co-written by William "Mickey" Stevenson, who was Weston's husband; Kim reportedly wasn't phrasing the lyrics just right on "My Baby Loves Me," and Mickey cut it with Martha, who ended up phrasing the same as Kim, anyway. The reason she lost out on "Dancing" is a little more vague. Percussionist Jack Ashford sounds like he's shaking a jar of paper clips on the fast but mellow "Nowhere to Run." One of Holland-Dozier- Holland's most engaging ballads, "Love Makes Me Do Foolish Things," is sung from the heart by Reeves. "Jimmy Mack" and "Honey Chile" sound like they were recorded yesterday. The Funk Brothers' def beats jump from the speakers and command your full attention; the harmonies on "Mack" are impeccable, while "Chile" has a Southern flavor and some interesting lyrics. "I Promise to Wait My Love" sounds recycled but "A Love Like Yours (Don't Come Knocking Everyday)" is gorgeous with it's slinky, crawling beat and displays Reeves, Ashford, and Beard at their harmonizing best.

Martha and the Vandellas (known from 1967 to 1972 as Martha Reeves and the Vandellas) were an American vocal group who found fame in the 1960s with a string of hit singles on Motown's Gordy label. Founded in 1960 by friends Annette Beard, Rosalind Ashford and Gloria Williams, the band eventually included Martha Reeves, who moved up in ranks as lead vocalist of the group after Williams' departure in 1962. The group signed with and eventually recorded all of their singles for Motown's Gordy imprint.

The group's string of hits included "(Love Is Like a) Heat Wave", "Nowhere to Run", "Jimmy Mack", "Bless You" and "Dancing in the Street", the latter song becoming their signature single. During their nine-year run on the charts from 1963 to 1972, Martha and the Vandellas charted over twenty-six hits and recorded in the styles of doo-wop, R&B, pop, blues, rock and roll and soul. Ten Vandellas songs reached the top ten of the Billboard R&B singles chart, including two R&B number ones.
