Description
MARTIN McBAIN
- "I THOUGHT I WAS A REFUGEE" / "WHICH WAY CAN I GO"
- Released on small Tasmanian private/indie label, Candle Records (catalogue number: SP-5876)...in one tiny pressing run.
The 'A' side is a song from his super-rare psych-folk LP, "Winter...On The Harbour", but is a totally different recorded version. Whereas the LP version is strictly acoustic, this version sees him with full band, still very folk-y and ethereal though. The 'B' side was, at the time, a totally new song and is equally as good. Both sides are full of melody, with gorgeous melodious vocals, and superb lyrics - of the ilk of mid-'60's Dylan...he was obviously a thinker.
McBain spent a couple of years in the UK when young and hung out with Bert Jansch while there - they even traded notes (jammed) a couple of times, and the influence of Jansch, Ralph McTell, Nick Drake, and John Renbourne is very apparent in his recordings, with the aforementioned added benefit of fine quality, personal lyrics a la Dylan, Bob Lind, Leonard Cohen. McBain's folk career lasted a mere 3 or 4 years of random coffee bar gigs in Tasmania, and the odd few more during one brief foray into Melbourne...and very little acclaim. Those who've ever heard his amazing album, and this single, could only agree the latter deserves to be addressed. He released just that one LP and two 7" singles (this was the first)...and faded away into obscurity.
Comes in pic sleeve....with 'A' side lyrics on the back.
