Heres a review I lifted from Youtube :
Martin McBain's obscure album, Winter on the Harbour, released on the small private label, Candle Records in 1983. Martin was a Tasmanian-based singer-songwriter, whose career spanned only four years in the 1980s, playing mainly at coffee houses and pubs around Tasmania and Melbourne. At one point, Martin even travelled to the UK and had the wonderful opportunity of trading notes and jamming with the British Folk legend and guitarist, Bert Jansch -- his guitar style is evident on a few tracks on this album. Martin's only other releases were two singles: 1984's 'I Thought I Was a Refugee / Which Way Can I Go' on Candle and 1986's 'Third World Child / I Can't See You Now', released as promo on a private Tasmanian label, Clear Air. These two singles feature Martin backed by a full backing band and see Martin explore a British-influenced pop/rock direction, with the latter single showing strong influences of John Lennon. Up until recently, when a few copies of the album have appeared on Ebay from one seller (purportedly sourced from Martin's left over stock), Martin's music had been widely undiscovered and practically unheard of amongst record collectors, in turn practically languishing in total obscurity for almost 30 years.
Musically, the songs on the album are predominantly contemporary 'loner folk' with Martin playing Acoustic Guitar, Harmonica and singing vocals, with the occasional flute backing from Peter Webster. Martin's youthful vocals are pure, fragile and slightly discordant at times, which might be an acquired taste for many people and may be seen as a weakness, however, this vulnerability in his voice contributes to the pervading naïve and earnest charm throughout the album. If anything, Martin's gift for simple colourful folk-pop melodies consequently make up for his vocal inexperience. Most notably, the songwriting on the album is of a high quality - incredibly melodious, distinguished and precocious (lyrically and harmonically) for a guy who sounds like he is about 15 years old and who looks no older than 18 in his photos. His highly competent guitar style ranges from simple strumming to complex Bert Jansch-like fingerpicking, which is best exemplified on the two instrumental numbers: the ragtime style of 'Raffles Blues' and the flute-inflected progressive folk closer 'Lowerwood Courts'.
Comparatively, with other Tasmanian folk acts on the Hobart-based Candle/Basket labels, Martin probably does not have the psychedelic or progressive edge that Howard Eynon or Steve Warner possessed, instead Martin's light and intimate sound (which is nothing like the erroneous comparison with Nick Drake proposed by the record dealer) is perhaps very similar to obscure Tasmanian folk duo, Ainslie and Morgan -- although Martin's album undoubtedly trumps their album in distinctiveness and musical quality. Overall, this album is a highly recommended for collectors of melodic contemporary folk music.
