Although this set is often issued under Jimmy Giuffre's name, the tenor saxophonist only actually appears on five of the 11 selections. The first date of what is actually a Marty Paich album features fellow tenor Bob Cooper in an octet with Paich's piano, trumpeter Conte Candoli, baritonist Jack Dulong, valve trombonist Bob Enevoldsen and flutist Harry Klee; both Enevoldsen and Klee play some of the sections on tenor, giving the ensemble a Four Brothers sound. Giuffre replaces Cooper on the later session and does emerge as the most consistently interesting soloist. The real stars are Paich's inventive arrangements.
