Title: J.Martzy/violin – Dvorak/Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in A minor, Op.53 – Fricsay/RIAS Berlin

Original German mono-pressing on DGG, LPM 18 152 ( there is NO stereo edition of this recording ). Yellow “big tulip” label, ”Alle Hersteller...”, heavy vinyl. The matrix stampers of both sides indicate a true first pressing: 21.3.1953 . The cover has 3/55 (= March 1955) printed on the back, lower left. It’s the early gatefold-cover with a picture of J.Martzy ( plus her biography ) on the back, linernotes are in German only, both seams and the right spine are “stitched”. (Reprints from 1957 onwards have a plain cover without the picture and liner-notes in 4 languages on the back ). Includes a small, 4 pages booklet by DGG on the subject of the correct handling of records.

Line-up: Johanna Martzy / violin - Ferenc Fricsay conducting the RIAS Symphonic Orchestra Berlin

Condition: J.Martzy's LPs are really beautiful and highly collectable, but it’s very hard to find her early 50ies pressings playing in mint- all of the time. This copy is the second I bought for myself and I have listened to it quiet often with pleasure before finding a mint copy ( for some bigger bucks ). I have listened very carefully to the whole album again from the beginning to the end, both on my Rega Planar 9 w. EINSTEIN mc cartridge and also on my LINN Axis w. DENON mc cartridge. Here is my complete and honest description:

the record looks pretty shiny & clean with just a few tiny papersleeve-lines, under a real strong artificial light you can see a few more papersleeve-lines. side 2 looks just like this in ex to ex-. side 1 looks basically the same, just a little worse, but there are 2 very short hairlines at the beginning, visually vg+ to vg.

These 2 lines cause some occasional low tics behind the music during the first 2 minutes, most of them are singular, a few are up to 3 in a row. Between these low tics the record plays in mint- during this first 2 minutes. The remaining movements of side 1( = the rest of the first movement and the complete second movement ) play in mint-- to ex++, each has ca. 5 very low tics and 1 or 2 tics being a little more prominent. overall playgrading of side 1 : vg-

The third movement (= the complete second side) plays in mint- to ex++, but it has ca. 4 very low tics and 2 tics being a little more prominent. overall playgrading of side 2 : ex-

Please note: the described playing-imperfections are only occasional and not seriously disturbing, the record plays in mint- for most of the time.

The sensitive thin gatefold-cover has some agewear, front and back show ringwear and discolourations, the inner is still nice with a brighter white colour, the corners have slight wear/creases, the left spine has opened in 3 parts: on top for ca.1 cm (= ca. 0,4 inch), in the lower third for ca. 1,5 cm (= ca. 0,6 inch) and at the bottom for ca. 5,5 cm (= ca. 2,1 inch), all three “stitched” spines/seam are intact, pl. look at all 7 photos; overall cover-grading : vg-

The little booklet is in mint--.

Please bid only after reading the complete description of the record-condition and if you can be happy with a copy like this.

Grading & Cleaning:

  • the record has been cleaned on my professional HANNL record cleaning machine

  • after that I playgraded it (completely or at least in parts) on my Rega Planar 9, Moving Coil cartridge by EINSTEIN:TU-3 Super Fine Line ( please consider that the playback might differ a bit depending on your own equipment )

  • I also visually graded the record under a strong light

  • only an unplayed record is mint, the highest grading for a used record is mint- ! My basic gradings are: mint – ex – vg.

  • cleaned records are stored in a new deluxe innersleeve and they are placed in a new PVC protection-sleeve !
