MARY BUTTERWORTH 's/t' LP (US, Vintage/Lion Productions, Catalogue #ROCK/LION-036-V-1) Brand new/unplayed copy of official, superb and limited (edition of 500 copies only) joint Vintage/Lion Productions label LP edition of rare and long legendary 1969 US private press psychedelic rock album by obscure California band Mary Butterworth.

(NOTE: LIMITED EDITION OF 500 COPIES ONLY!)

'Limited edition LP reissue of this legendary rare underground 1969 psychedelic private press record. Mary Butterworth played around southern California for a limited time during 1968-69, and then vanished into the mist, but not before leaving behind this fine slab of psychedelic rock. The band recorded this album in 1969, but only gave or sold the record to fans and friends, never marketing it to the general public. At some point, a copy of the album ended up wth a bo*tlegger overseas who pressed and marketed the album there. This created a Mary Butterworth following, and soon the price of the original vinyl release skyrocketed to over $300 (now $1,000) as Mary Butterworth became a key part of Psychedelic Rock music history. Re-mastered from the original recording and featuring the song 'Feeling I Get, which appeared in the Golden Globe and Oscar winning movie Lost In Translation (starring Bill Murray and the delicious Scarlett Johansson), although not on that film's soundtrack recording. But no fear, you can now get the entire album.'

'Inside one of the greatest private press sleeves of all time you will find enjoyable LA area (they were not from Idaho) high-school pothead sounds with Hammond organ upfront and the stonedest, most echo-laden drum sound this side of King Tubby. The album mixes a teenage blues-rock vibe with a westcoasty outdoors feel in the relaxed vocals and some jazzy flute solos. The sound is more mellow than lysergic, but despite uninspired lyrics I find tracks like "Phase II" and "It's A Hard Road" to be truly great. An early discovery, Mary Butterworth contains enough personality and good music to defend its position in the classic private press canon, despite the uninspired guitar leads. The album was sold via gigs and to friends with no formal distribution. The band also had a pre-LP 45 on Custom Fidelity. Surprisingly, one track from the LP is used in Sofia Coppola's acclaimed Lost In Translation movie.' - Patrick Lundborg/Acid Archives

Tracks on this LP are as follows:

  • Phase II
  • Optional Blues
  • It's A Hard Road
  • Make You Want Me
  • Feeling I Get
