Smokey Robinson's paradoxical composition "Two Lovers" rides shotgun on a Mary Wells LP designed to cross genres. The beautiful floater is about Smokey's wife Claudette, a Gemini, the astrological sign of the split personality. The harmonic "Operator," also written by Robinson, is one of Mary's most commercial efforts; it would have scored if Motown hadn't stamped it on the back on "Two Lovers" — what a waste. Wells is backed by the Love Tones, the most unheralded group in Motown's history; the three young men's claim to fame is backing Wells in the studio, the most famous coupling being "The One Who Really Loves You." You won't find Mary singing with more pain then she does on "Laughing Boy," where once again the Love Tones shine. Motown had big hopes for this ballad, pressing hundreds of thousands of copies in advance, something unheard of in the '60s for an R&B artist. The normal procedure was to press as you sold, hoping you could keep the distributors supplied with enough copies to satisfy their clients; though the record charted and was technically a hit, Motown manufactured far more copies then they sold. An attempt to spotlight Wells' versatility is evident in remakes of "Guess Who" and "Goody, Goody." A dark horse here is "My 2 Arms - You Equals Tears," but unfortunately its only exposure was on this LP.

All Mary Wells' albums on Motown are highly collectable and quite coveted, but this one is ridiculously rare and has got to be one of her rarest. This is the third Mary Wells studio album , from 1963 , and included two big hits for Mary Wells: the title track and 'The Operator'. And the rest of the album is just as good. An absolutely CRITICAL early Motown album! (a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has a partially split spine (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the spine and the bottom seam

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (BARELY VISIBLE)  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-        Cover has a small original price sticker, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)
