ONE OF the great bands from Kansas City was ANDY KIRK AND HIS TWELVE CLOUDS OF JOY. They were a powerhouse unit, and they had a secret weapon: Pianist MARY LOU WILLIAMS. She did most of the band's arranging and all of the amazing hot piano playing. Known as 'The Lady Who Swings the Band," Mary Lou Williams became the most famous woman in jazz up to the '70s.
A sample of her terrific composing and arranging is the tersely but aptly titled "MARY'S IDEA." An out-and-out hot streak, with solos by HARRY LAWSON (trumpet), hubby JOHN WILLIAMS (alto sax), CLAUDE "FIDDLER" WILLIAMS (violin) and of course, featuring Mary Lou herself on piano.
"ONCE OR TWICE" on the flip, is on the order of a "double-entendre" song. Spicy lyrics, but much less interesting as music, per se.
Fortunately for us, the side of this record harmed the least is "Mary's Idea." It's about E-, with slight wear and scratches. "Once or Twice" is heavily worn and damaged, V-. Shows you once again that there's no underestimating the taste of the American public.
This original 1930 Brunswick 4863 is in split condition: E- for "Mary's Idea"; V- with groove gouges for "Once or Twice."

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
