MASTERPIECES BY ELLINGTON: Duke Ellington & His Orchestra, Ed1 - His 1st 12" LP
Description
Offered is the Green Label, First Edition Pressing of the Debut of Duke Ellington on the early 12", 33 1/3 Long Play format.
Here are some internet notes about this important part of Jazz genre in the History of Recorded Music:
"Recorded in New York on December 18, 1950 these four tracks were Ellington's first LP in the 12" format, issued on Columbia's Masterworks imprint, and it is among the earliest such LPs released by Columbia (1951). Containing three proven compositions, the fourth (The Tattooed Bride) was first played in 1948 in concert, and recorded in a studio session only now. The LP was reissued by Columbia in 1956 (CL 825) with a different, blue sleeve design, and keeping this design again in 1973 in Columbia Special Products' Collectors' Series (JCL 825)."

A Note About The Recording Technology:
In the early 1950’s, the invention of "Long Play" Vinyl Records (33 1/3 RPM) was a new analog Mono technology that became more commercially popular than the existing 78 RPM shellac recordings. While these early Monos are Great Treasures, they can playback with what we modern music listeners call "background noise", and an occasional click or pop.
Improved mono recording methods later pioneered by Rudy Van Gelder (and others), and then Stereo in late 1950, reduced this noise problem.
Our grading evaluations examine the record condition as a result of use after it was manufactured.

RECORD GRADING DESCRIPTION:
THIS RECORD IS SIGHT-GRADED ONLY UNDER A BRIGHT LIGHT, ACCORDING TO THESE DEFINITIONS:
SEALED: RECORD IS WRAPPED IN PLASTIC & UNOPENED.
NM-: RECORD HAS LITTLE OR NO INDICATION THAT IT HAS BEEN PLAYED.
EX: MINIMAL SIGNS OF USE (LIGHT SCRATCHING/PAPER SCUFFS), BUT IN ALL A RECORD THAT HAS BEEN WELL-CARED FOR.
VG+: LESS CARE THAN EX, LIGHT SCRATCHING OR SCUFFING IS MORE EXTENSIVE. STILL VERY PLAYABLE & WILL LIKELY PROVIDE A QUALITY SOUND.
VG & BELOW: WHILE PLAYABLE, THIS RECORD HAS BEEN AROUND THE BLOCK. OBVIOUS SIGNS OF WEAR & SHOULD BE CONSIDERED TO BE IN A LOW GRADE. A RECORD GRADED BELOW VG MAY HAVE A VALUE BASED UPON ITS RARITY OR UNIQUENESS.
WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU CLEAN THIS RECORDING BEFORE PLAYING. RECORDS THAT ARE DECADES OLD CAN ATTRACT & ACCUMULATE DAMAGING FOREIGN MATERIAL THAT REDUCES SOUND QUALITY. THIS IS NORMALLY EASILY CORRECTED WITH A GOOD CLEANING.
