MATCHING MOLE "Little Red Record" UK CBS 1972 1st PRESS
A1/B1, RED MOLE INNER, ONCE PLAYED, EXCELLENT AUDIO
MATCHING MOLE'S LITTLE RED RECORD
ORIGINAL UK CBS (S 65260) FIRST PRESSING (October 1972) OF MATCHING MOLE'S RICH AND COMPLEX SECOND STUDIO LP, PRODUCED BY ROBERT FRIPP, "Matching Mole's Little Red Record" - IN ONCE PLAYED CONDITION (the spindle hole is still very tight and displays possibly just one light spindle trace) AND IT DELIVERS EXCELLENT AUDIO (ON MY SYSTEM - AT A LOUD VOLUME) (see detailed audio assessment below) - VERY NICE COPY OF THIS NOTORIOUSLY TROUBLESOME FIRST PRESSING
PRESSED WITH THE FIRST CBS SOLID ORANGE LABELS
MATRIX: S 65260 A1 / S 65260 B1
THE RECORD IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL MATT SLEEVE PRINTED BY “Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd., England”
AND COMES COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL RED MOLE INNER SLEEVE
Track Listing:
Side 1: Starting In The Middle Of The Day We Can Drink Our Politics Away / Marchides / Nan True's Hole / Righteous Rhumba / Brandy As In Benj
Side 2: Gloria Gloom / God Song / Flora Fidgit / Smoke Signal
LABELS: The labels are clean, bright and unmarked with just one light spindle trace - the spindle hole is still very tight - barely played - MINT(-)
VINYL Visual: The vinyl still retains its original deep, like new, glossy sheen - there is one (minor and superficial) light mark on Side two which has no real audio consequence but a tiny white spot on Side One does sound (see detailed audio assessment below) - this is barely visible to the eye and I didn't realise it was there until I played the record - visually NEAR MINT/EXCELLENT+
VINYL Audio: This is a very nice copy indeed which has possibly been played just the one time and it delivers outstanding audio quality throughout with a rich, warm and complex sound. I have however, always found this first pressing to be very problematic and personally I have never come across one which plays to anything even approaching mint condition. On the whole this one sounds wonderful and must easily rank as one of the finest I've heard but the spot mentioned above (on Side One) gives rise to about a dozen or so clicks as it is passed over - otherwise, this side plays beautifully. Side Two plays on the whole very well, but the quiet ambient introduction to the side does have a little surface noise - nothing major - and later on there are two brief patches of what sounds like groove-wear (which of course they can't be as the record is virtually unplayed) these are however, very, very brief. Apart from these flaws the rest of Side Two sounds great with just the occasional light intermittent background tick. I have been hyper, hyper critical in grading this one (as always) as this first press is highly sought after. Personally I have been looking for a mint copy (for my own collection) for years but never found one (even though I have bought many which look stone cold mint only to find issues similar to the ones outlined above). Grading wise it's difficult to sum up in one of two words as I think you know what it's like from the detailed description above - but in my opinion this is still a mighty fine copy - overall, I'd say EXCELLENT
SLEEVE: The sleeve is unmarked with general light storage wear and some age-related discolouration to the white portions - EXCELLENT
and the red "mole" inner is clean, fresh and unmarked but there are small central splits to both side and bottom edges and a very small tear at the opening edge - VERY GOOD
PLEASE HAVE A LOOK AT MY PICTURES - I USUALLY TAKE QUITE A FEW SO YOU CAN GET A CLEAR INDICATION OF EVERY DETAIL OF THE ITEM
