MAX ROACH: IT'S TIME (1962), IMPULSE AS-16, USA, 33 1/3, STEREO, LP

Rare original. This album by Max Roach, released in 1962 on Impulse! AS-16, is an unusual set. The outing featured the drummer's all- star sextet (which consisted of trumpeter Richard Williams, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, trombonist Julian Priester, pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Art Davis, and Max Roach himself - who is generally considered alongside the most important drummers in history) joined by a vocal choir conducted by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson and orchestrated by Roach.

Unlike most other collaborations, the choir was not overly gospel-oriented and was utilized as a sort of jazz ensemble. Each of the horn players has a feature or two and singer Abbey Lincoln stars on "Lonesome Lover". Lots of drum solos, of course ...

Rare original LP. Laminated gatefold cover with original Impulse!/ABC Records catalog inner sleeve. Van Gelder stamp in Deadwax! Cover has a 1cm seam split on the front bottom, some wear on the back cover and inside of the gatefold, a stain inside of the gatefold, 0,5 cm scuffing on the spine (see pictures). = VG+

The record plays excellent throughout, only very, very occasional fizz at the beginnings of each side, no scuffs. = E+

All of my records are carefully packed in sturdy cardboard mailers. I will add two cardboard supports, and the record will be out of sleeve to prevent seam splits.
