Taking their inspiration from the Jimi Hendrix Experience, May Blitz had a similar 'heavy' sound to other early 70's UK 'underground' prog / psych / space rock bands such as, Black Sabbath, Stray, Groundhogs and Hawkwind.

Vinyl: VG

(Very Good....vinyl has a few light marks and small scratches BUT plays very well throughout)

(Vinyl surfaces are bright and shiny, flat and warp free. The LP has been well played and both sides do show a few light surface marks, wispy hairlines and tiny scratches (mainly on side 2). This original UK thick heavy vinyl pressing still plays very well and sounds great played at loud volume. Both sides play throughout with a loud-cut vibrant sound, typical of these well pressed Vertigo label albums. All frequencies are clear and although as stated there are a few small scratches there is not any major deterioration in sound quality. On playback there are a few tiny ticks and light clicks and you can hear some surface crackle on the run in grooves, between tracks and some of the less violent quiter parts! There are NO jumps and NO sticks. Overall a very good playing copy of this incredible heavy progressive psych rock album which should keep you happy until you can find a mint copy.....if one exists!)

Gatefold Sleeve: VG (+)

(Characteristic thick textured Vertigo gatefold sleeve with original 'grotesque' front and back cover artwork! The front of the gatefold is very clean with just a few small scuffs and general light wear. On the back, just above the catalogue number, is written 5862 in biro. There is an are of blue biro on the monster's stomach! All the seams and spine have some shelfwear rubbing, nothing too serious, there are no splits or rips or tears. On the inside of the gatefold someone has doodled with biro pen on the May Blitz logo (actually looks very neat) and again some biro marks on top right corner. Overall though this great cover is still in a very solid condition and is in far better shape than many I have seen due to its fragile unlaminated matt finish)

On offer here, from my own collection, is an original UK Swirl Vertigo label 1st pressing of the legendary and simply awesome self-titled May Blitz 1970 debut LP. This is without doubt a seriously RARE and truly GREAT early 1970's heavy progressive psych rock album. Absolutely essential LP for any progressive, heavy rock, psych or Vertigo label collector....This SEMINAL heavy prog / psych album is easily among the BEST and RAREST Vertigo label LP's ever released!

MAY BLITZ, briefly an integral part of the UK heavy underground live music scene, were formed by ex-Jeff Beck Group member Tony Newman (drums), who recruited Canadians James Black (lead guitar, vocals) and Reid Hudson (bass and vocals) in 1969. There were many such "power trios" around at the time most famously Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Groundhogs and Bakerloo. Their debut album "May Blitz" was released on Vertigo (6360 007) in 1970 but despite containing some incredible original heavy music sold moderately. The album was housed in a very distinctive cover which was designed by NME cartoonist Tony Benyon.

The first track "Smokin' the Day Away" , a smoke in the country away from the "smoke" starts slowly, almost ponderously, and develops into a jam before returning to the main theme, my favourite song, it is very effective I can almost "smell" that stuff! It also contains some dazzling drum work and unusual metallic sounding spacy guitar effects. "I Don't Know" , which has another "back to the country" theme is a lazy bluesey number which contains some magnificent guitar work which snakes its way along. "Dreaming", as the title suggests, is a slow dreamy song with acoustic guitar and shimmering cymbals, then momentarily speeds up into a frenzy of screaming "Arthur Brown" style half-sung vocals, fast tom toms and slide guitar. "Squeet" ("squeet all over the wall?...what could they possibly be talking about??) is an unusual song which develops into a boogie-style jam, "Tomorrow May Come", a dream of a better world, is a slow and ethereal song with echoed vocals, drums and guitar, this mood changes into the fast-paced "Fire Queen" with screaming vocals, thundering drums and wild fuzzy acid guitar work. Waves lapping introduce the last track "Virgin Waters", a beautiful song about first love, containing some lovely effects, whispered vocals, brilliant drumming and echoey acoustic guitar which build to a heavy climax. May Blitz were a simply brilliant group and this is an amazing album, definitely a "lost masterpiece" from the early 70's British underground scene. Mega rare now...this is easily one of the best heavy progressive psych rock albums from the early 70's underground scene here in the UK.

This original UK Vertigo label rarity would be a great addition to any progressive, psych rock or spiral Vertigo collection!! A 'must have' for any collector of rare original vinyl LP's from the late 60s early 70s era!!L

MINT (M): The record / cd displays barely any signs of use, if any, with no marks or deterioration in sound quality. Extra items and cover are near perfect.

EXCELLENT (EX): Shows only minor signs of being played with very little lessening in sound quality. The Cover and extras will have some light wear and or creasing

VERY GOOD (VG): Has been played many times but has no major deterioration in sound quality, despite some noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches. Cover and extras will have normal wear and tear but no major defects

GOOD (G): Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and any extras may suffer from folding, scuffing, split spine, discoloration etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable and has considerable surface noise and may even jump. Cover and contents will be torn stained and/or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly. Covers badly damaged or partly missing

+ or - : Indicates slightly better (+) or slightly lesser (-) condition than main grade
