MAY BLITZ - "May Blitz" - Very rare original 1970 UK first pressing (1Y/2Y matrix) vinyl LP released on the highly collectable Spiral Vertigo record label. The LP is housed in its original characteristic unlaminated matt textured gatefold sleeve, comes complete with the original Black and White poly-lined Vertigo Spiral inner sleeve.

MAY BLITZ were a heavy rock power trio whose two albums are highly sought after by collectors worldwide. A whole album of power-trio violence. The overall atmosphere is gloomy, especially when the tempo is decreasing like in Dreaming, where even some acoustic guitar becomes hearable. Both albums contain heavy duty fuzz guitar power riffs, thunderous rhythm work , dark doomy echoed vocals and "space" effects swirling around. Taking their inspiration from the Jimi Hendrix Experience, May Blitz had a similar genuinely 'heavy' sound to other early 70's UK 'underground' prog / psych / space rock bands such as, Black Sabbath, Stray, Groundhogs and Hawkwind.

On offer here, from my own collection, is an original UK Swirl Vertigo label 1st pressing of the legendary and simply awesome self-titled May Blitz 1970 debut LP. This is without doubt a truly RARE and GREAT early 1970's heavy progressive psych rock album. Absolutely essential LP for any progressive, heavy rock, psych or Vertigo label collector....This SEMINAL heavy prog / psych album is easily among the BEST and RAREST Vertigo label LP's ever released!! Original UK 1st pressing swirl vertigo issue of this supreme top-notch monstrously heavy guitar power trio LP!!

MAY BLITZ, briefly an integral part of the UK heavy underground live music scene, were formed by ex-Jeff Beck Group member Tony Newman (drums), who recruited Canadians James Black (lead guitar, vocals) and Reid Hudson (bass and vocals) in 1969. There were many such "power trios" around at the time most famously Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Groundhogs and Bakerloo. Their debut album "May Blitz" was released on Vertigo (6360 007) in 1970 but despite containing some incredible original heavy music sold moderately. The album has excellent sound quality and production, the distinctive cover was designed by NME cartoonist Tony Benyon.

The first track "Smokin' the Day Away" , a smoke in the country away from the "smoke" starts slowly, almost ponderously, and develops into a jam before returning to the main theme, my favourite song, it is very effective I can almost "smell" that stuff! It also contains some dazzling drum work and unusual metallic sounding spacy guitar effects. "I Don't Know" , which has another "back to the country" theme is a lazy bluesey number which contains some magnificent guitar work which snakes its way along. "Dreaming", as the title suggests, is a slow dreamy song with acoustic guitar and shimmering cymbals, then momentarily speeds up into a frenzy of screaming "Arthur Brown" style half-sung vocals, fast tom toms and slide guitar. "Squeet" ("squeet all over the wall?...what could they possibly be talking about??) is an unusual song which develops into a boogie-style jam, "Tomorrow May Come", a dream of a better world, is a slow and ethereal song with echoed vocals, drums and guitar, this mood changes into the fast-paced "Fire Queen" with screaming vocals, thundering drums and wild fuzzy acid guitar work. Waves lapping introduce the last track "Virgin Waters", a beautiful song about first love, containing some lovely effects, whispered vocals, brilliant drumming and echoey acoustic guitar which build to a heavy climax. May Blitz were a simply brilliant group and this is an amazing album, definitely a "lost masterpiece" from the early 70's British underground scene. The matt textured gatefold cover features a fat and monstrous woman in underwear and wearing a hat is drawn in a sordid black and white on the front. Opening the cover shows her to be on top of a city of empty blocks of flats, where a likewise monstrous ape looks up to her with a mixture of malice and servitude. About as ugly as it gets, but therefore almost laudable. The lettering is hardly readable pink on light grey. It's a haven of normality in this context. The inside shows more of the same. Now, the woman seems to flow out downwards into something like roots of flesh that form the name of the band. Small and out of character are the band photo's at the right. Left, three notables state that they surely dig May Blitz. Well, why not? Mega rare now...this is easily one of the best heavy progressive psych rock albums from the early 70's underground scene here in the UK.

This original UK big league Vertigo label rarity would be a major addition to any progressive , psych rock or spiral Vertigo collection!! A 'must have' for any serious collector of rare original vinyl LP's. Low start with no reserve! Don't miss it!

Side One: VERY GOOD (Has several scuff marks and hairlines which are clearly visible, all are light, you cannot feel them, and they do not affect the playback on my Linn Deck at all. The record plays excellently with superb loud-cut sound)

Side Two: VERY GOOD (+) (Has only some very light wispy surface hairline marks which you can see under a bright light....plays fantastically throughout with great sound clarity)

Although as stated above the vinyl does display some surface marks, mainly on the first side, none of these affect the playback at all on my Linn Deck, the album plays EXCELLENTLY throughout with a POWERFUL CLEAR SOUND....There are NO jumps, NO sticks....nothing whatsoever to spoil the listening experience!! Summing up the vinyl is in VG / VG + condition visually BUT aurally it is at least EXCELLENT with only some insignificant light surface static in a couple of places. I am being very strict on my gradings, as a collector myself, I fully understand the importance of a correct description. You can bid with complete confidence.

This original UK thick heavy vinyl pressing sounds fantastic played at loud volume. Both sides play excellently throughout with a booming loud vibrant sound. All frequencies are crystal clear and there is barely any discernable deterioration in sound quality. There are no serious pops or loud clicks and only some very minimal surface static you can only detect in a few places and on the run in areas. Nothing serious and nothing to spoil your enjoyment of this truly awesome heavy prog / psych rock LP. A very good copy of this incredible heavy progressive psych rock album!

Gatefold Sleeve: VERY GOOD (+) Near EXCELLENT

The front of the sleeve has light wear, the inside of the gatefold is very clean. There is some light rubbing on the edges and the spine. On the spine there is some rubbing wear, mainly near the bottom edge and also near the top where you can see a small scuff 'bump' and a little crease (see pic no.9). On the back of the sleeve there are two small sticker removal marks near the top edge, one near the spine above the 6360007 cat.no. and the other which is almost unoticeable near the open out edge, both of these have been coloured in. Please see pictures no.7 & 8. The sleeve has NO Rips, NO tears, NO unwanted writing!! Overall a very nice solid original copy of this legendary 'grotesque' Vertigo gatefold sleeve!!

Spiral Labels: EXCELLENT

Clean and Unmarked with NO Stickers, NO Writing....You can just see a few feint spindle marks in bright light.

MINT (M): The record displays barely any signs of use, if any, with no marks or deterioration in sound quality. Extra items and cover are near perfect.

EXCELLENT (EX): Shows only minor signs of being played with very little lessening in sound quality. The Cover and extras will have some light wear and or creasing

VERY GOOD (VG): Has been played many times but has no major deterioration in sound quality, despite some noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches. Cover and extras will have normal wear and tear but no major defects

GOOD (G): Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and any extras may suffer from folding, scuffing, split spine, discoloration etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable and has considerable surface noise and may even jump. Cover and contents will be torn stained and/or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly. Covers badly damaged or partly missing

+ or - : Indicates slightly better (+) or slightly lesser (-) condition than main grade

When posted the records are removed from the cover, if possible, and placed in a PVC outer protective sleeve to prevent sleeve splits in the post. I use brand new mailers, either the envelope style with thick stiffeners to prevent any sleeve bends in transit, or the "cruciform" style that wrap around the LP. I aim to dispatch all items within 48 hours of receiving payment. It is recommended that you choose the insurance option for higher value items. As stated above I cannot be held responsible for any item(s) lost or damaged in the post that are not shipped via insured / registered mail. I always obtain a certificate proof of posting receipt for every item sent, which will complete our transaction.
