[Due to a computer breakdown, and having to work from the L.A. Public Library, I was able only to post re-runs for the past six weeks! From now on, there will be almost totally NEW listings, which I hope will deeply intrigue you.]
THE ALLEN BROTHERS were white hillbilly singers, but their music was so steeped in the blues that many people, including record company execs, mistook them for blacks. In fact, their first release was in the Columbia "Race" series. The brothers were so offended that they switched to Victor, and never looked back. But REALLY! Methinks the lady doth protesteth too much! Their music is of a class with the Tennessee Chocolate Drops or the Mississippi Sheiks.
This record, "MAYBE NEXT WEEK SOMETIME" is a hilarious romp with sex, danger, and the datebook. The flip side, "SHAKE IT, IDA, SHAKE IT" is dance music, and a character assessment of the titular Ida. Both sides show the Allens at their trenchant best.
This original 1930 Montgomery Ward 4439, despite its rough & ready (V) appearance, actually sounds HUMONGOUSLY better than it looks! For sound, it's about V++!!
