REVIEW ON RATEYOURMUSIC: Impecible melodic hard rock with a knack for complex songwriting. Maypole was a group that formed in 1969 in Baltimore. After firing their first manager, they stated being managed by some record company promo men that got them really good radio spots in the area and eventually a record deal in 1971. Colossus was a recently opened record label that put out Maypole, which was a quite unique record for the time being that it spanned over 50 minutes. But ultimately Colossus was short lived, and when it dissolved in 1972, Maypole broke up. They did release a set of archival recordings in 2008 entitled Falling Angels but this is all the recorded music that the group has to offer. The album Maypole has seen a fair number of reissues in more recent years and originals can set you back over $100.

I find that the music of Maypole is quite unique for a number of reasons, mostly the cohesion of the record. The first three tracks, "Glance At The Past", "Show Me The Way", and "Henry Started", form one large suite that lasts about 10 minutes, and each track feeds into the next incredibly well. They followed this up with another suite, this one containing "Changes Places" and "Under A Wave", the latter of the two tracks being one of my favorites. The sound of this record, as a result, is very cohesive and works together quite well, especially on side one. The music itself is quite unique, being a sort of heavy psychedelic rock, but with an emphasis on song structure and vocal harmony. There are parts where the group jams, but they're interspersed with this surprisingly complex structure that the group upholds very well. I will say that this album may be a little bit too long at 50 minutes, though I like every track the second half lags just a little bit. "Come Back" and "You Were" are highlights from the second side, especially with the sort of hazy vocal harmonies of the latter, but my favorite track overall was the closer, "Stand Alone". The initial riff may remind you of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven", but believe it or not this track came out first. It's the longest track at 7 minutes, and it has that incredibly lysergic feeling about it as it continually rises and falls in volume. If i could count the suites as one track (which I personally do not), they'd probably be my favorite, but "Stand Alone" is also something special in its own right.

Overall, if you're a fan of that melodic heavy psych sound groups were doing in the late 60s and early 70s, that marriage of pop sensibilities with other heavier sounds, this is a great album for you. It's a little front-loaded, but it's undeniably quite fantastic. Maypole draws lots of comparisons to other groups of the time, but I don't think their sound is really similar to any of them. I'd give this a 9 out of 10.
