THIS LP REALLY NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION, ARGUABLY THE BIGGEST AND BADDEST SOUND TO COME OUT OF DETROIT, AND THE STATES FOR THAT MATTER. THIS ALBUM HAD 'THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME' WRITTEN ALL OVER IT.RECORDED LIVE AT DETROIT'S GRANDE BALLROOM OVER TWO NIGHTS IN 1968. POORLY RECEIVED BY THE MUSIC PRESS AND NOW NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND, COMPLETE WITH UNCENSORED INNER TEXT SLEEVE. IT HARDLY EVER COMES UP FOR SALE.
THESE EARLY UK ELEKTRA PRESSES WERE RELEASED IN TINY NUMBERS AND ALMOST IMMEDIATELY DELETED.
THE FRAGILE UK POLYDOR UNLAMINATED GATEFOLD SLEEVE IS STILL NICE AND FLAT WITH NO SPLITS OR TEARS, THE OUTER ARTWORK IS STILL BRIGHT AND THE INNER PHOTOGRAPHY OF THE BAND AND JOHN SINCLAIR IS IN GREAT CONDITION, WITH ONLY SOME MINUTE STAINS ON THE TOP (PLEASE, SEE PICTURES). IT INCLUDES THE UNCENSORED TEXT THAT WAS REMOVED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY FROM ALL LATER SLEEVES.
VERY LIGHT EDGE AND CORNER WEAR WITH THE SPINE STILL READABLE. THERE IS A CREASE ON THE TOP RIGHT CORNER BUT, ALL IN ALL, A VERY PRESENTABLE CLEAN SLEEVE GRADED VERY GOOD +.
THE DISC IS A NICE HEAVY VINYL FIRST PRESS, WITH TEXTURED UK ELEKTRA LABELS. THE PLAYING SURFACES ARE STILL VERY SHINY WITH VERY FEW LIGHT SURFACE MARKING AND HAIRLINES. THE AUDIO IS LOUD AND CLEAR. GRADED AS STRONG EX.
I grade all my records using the Record Collector's Grading System which is as follows:
Mint - The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.
Excellent - The record shows signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
Very Good - The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
Good - The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits discoloration etc.
Fair - The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise: it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/ or defaced.
Poor - The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
All records are sent in strong mailers with cardboard stiffeners.
