Brief Info: A blues-rock duo that were signed to John Peel’s independent Dandelion label, this being the second of three albums they made on it. The label founded to give opportunities to acts Peel liked and thought unlikely to get a recording contract. Most fairly obscure, poor sellers, thus collectable and scarce. Medicine Head were one of the very few who recorded on Dandelion to have any single chart success, that with ‘One and One is One’, but by then recording for Polydor with Peel’s label now folded. This is a lovely album with a lovely clean record and music, the cover has a little wear, but this is a fragile one and is seldom seen without some. It also includes the quite elusive lyric insert sheet in practically as-made condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format with texturing on all surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the lyric insert sheet.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: Nothing Obvious, odd tiny tip-in possible.

Cover Front: This is a very fragile and wear-prone cover, the front has some corner rubbing and patchy edge rubs. Also a fine crease or possibly scuff line towards the left, any real creases are few and small. Overall, a fine looking front and this far from easy with soft textured card.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same minus the fine mark. The lack of ringwear is a massive plus on a cover that will seldom be seen without any.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Apart from gentle creasing to the bottom corner tips, this has little else to fault.

Top Edges: Some patchy rubbing, more moderate near the very ends. Both straight and meet up flush.

Bottom Edges: Light to moderate less patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring only light as seen viewed end-on. Record can on either edge as both are open with no adhesive marks on the front, this probably designed for the insert sheet.

Spine and Text: Apart from a little rubbing to the very ends, this is a splendid spine with little to fault. Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. This never had any text, the graphic design just flows around.

Corners: Moderate corner rubbing and a little creasing with fair to fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: With most of any wear on the corners and bottom edges, this is still a very solid example of a scarce and quite delicate cover. Not for the perfectionists, but many collectors will be happy.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: with only mild age darkening and some natural crinkle. A heavy-duty plain white polylined inner with two perfect window circles, minimal creasing and no edge splits or repairs. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

The Lyrics Insert: MINT(–): the ochre colour lyric insert is practically as made with the song words printed on one side. Clean, fresh and practically crease-free. This somewhat elusive and it will rarely be found better. It has a lightly textured surface and is guaranteed original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with lovely fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality Dandelion album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and appears little handled. The cover may have a little wear, but there is little to fault with the record. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended – this being the first one of these I have had to offer.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
