PEACHES IN THE SPRINGTIME

Those who's music taste follows a similar vein as R. Crumb will surely know the Memphis Jug Band. They were a Memphis-based group from the late 1920s that featured guitars mixed with banjos, harmonicas, washboards, kazoo, and jugs blown to supply the bass.

The group was built around Will Shade (aka Son Brimmer or Sun Brimmer) and the members of this jug band varied from day to day, with Shade booking gigs and arranging recording sessions. The band functioned as a training ground for musicians who would go on to success with careers of their own.

This group played under many different names, including the Picaninny Jug Band, Memphis Sanctified Singers, the Carolina Peanut Boys, the Dallas Jug Band, the Memphis Sheiks, and the Jolly Jug Band. They also backed up a number of musicians on their recordings, so they were pretty well documented in their day.

Their Victor recordings were made in Memphis and Atlanta between 1927 and 1930. On this pair of songs the group is Will Shade on guitar, Will Weldon on guitar, Vol Stevens on banjo, and Charlie Polk blowin' the jug.

"Evergreen Money Blues" was recorded in the Memphis Auditorium (in Memphis!) on February 1, 1928.

"Peaches In The Springtime" was recorded there nearly two weeks later, on February 13, 1928.
