What we have here is one of the most beloved, and most beautifully lean and mean west-of-Mississippi honky-tonk albums ever made. Merle Haggard, whose poetic imagery and unique, expressive voice (not to mention the Strangers, his capable backing band) are unique in all of Country & Western, recorded this simple, unadorned , heartrendingly emotional masterpiece in early 1967. Just ask Elvis Costello who covered (beautifully) "The Bottle let me down", a classic tale of heartache and wine, on his "Almost Blue" album. Or better yet, ask the "other" Elvis, Elvis Presley (who just left the building). Elvis Presley covered the immortal "Long Black Limousine" on his classic 1969 "Elvis in Memphis" album. Unlike Elvis Presley's version, which is melodramatic and pathos-laden to the breaking point, Merle Haggard's version is lean, more humane and much more listenable. Oh, lest we forget: the album also includes "I threw away the rose" - our favorite Country ballad of all time (and, mind you, the competition for that title is quite fierce).

This is the next-to-the-last album Haggard would release in mono format, and is exquisitely hard to find. While Merle went on to become a superstar and a proverbial American icon, and while he would later have many bigger hits than the tracks on this album, none of his later material comes even close to the authenticity and genuineness of these early tracks. Needless to say, the copies of this great album are brutally hard to come by, specially in this gorgeous condition.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD++ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(d)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine and the top seam (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel

-         Minor, barely visible (1/4-inch) scratch mark noted on the top seam  (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam (nothing significant)

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
