Description
The Brazilian-born pianist and composer Jocy de Oliveira studied piano in Brazil with J. Kliass and in Paris with Marguerite Long. She received her M.A. in composition under a Pan American Fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis in 1968. The recipient of several dedications, including works by Berio, Xenakis and Hiller, this gifted artist has championed contempo- rary music all over the world, in addition to composing music herself for various theatrical, environmental, literary, cinematic and television media. She has published several books, and has conducted music seminars in Brazil and the U.S. She was an Asso- ciate Professor of Music at the Univ. of South Florida, teaching both piano and composition; and is currently on the Faculty at the New School in New York, giving a workshop on new music. During the 1976/77 season she performed several programs for Radio France in Paris, in addition to concertizing in Denmark, France, Brazil, Germany and the U.S. She is a recent recipient of a grant for composition from the Creative Arts Public Service Programs, made possible by funds from the N.Y. State Council of the Arts. In addition to recording Messiaen's '20 Regards' for VOX, she has also recorded his 'Catalogue d'Oiseaux' (SVBX 5464).
