Ask any true hip-hop fan and they can tell you exactly where and when they first heard Operation: Doomsday. The album has floated in and out of print from its original pressing on famed New York imprint Fondle 'Em Records in 1999, gaining mythical status amongst underground hip-hop fans and music aficionados as one of the landmark releases of the decade. The record emerged from personal tragedy in DOOM's own life: after earning praise for his work with group KMD in the early 90s, DOOM (then known as Zev Love X) lost his brother and collaborator DJ Sub-Roc to a car accident and was dropped by Elektra within the course of one week, never seeing the KMD sophomore album realized on the label. Following several years hiatus, he re-emerged as MF DOOM, his masked alter-ego, to exact his revenge with Operation: Doomsday, showcasing his abstract wordplay, pointed wit, subtly subversive lyrics and alcohol drenched stream-of-consciousness flow over varied, adventurous sample-based production. The album's impact would not only forever change the course of DOOM's career, but the landscape of hip-hop as it was then known.
The album is presented as a remastered and expanded two-disc set, featuring a 32-page lyric book and a second disc with alternate versions, b-sides and instrumentals, packaged in a 7 x 8 throwback tin lunch box. San Francisco-based artist Jason Jagel, who provided the incredible painting for DOOM's MM...FOOD album, was enlisted to create both an updated version of Doomsday's iconic comic-book style cover art for the box and a set of 10 Doomsday MCs trading cards (featuring DOOM, Kurious, and others - 10 in total, one for each character featured on the album) especially for this release. This is Operation: Doomsday as it was intended to be heard: as bold, creative and villainous as the time the world first faced MF DOOM.
