Released in 1972 by Contemporary Records, Art Pepper’s …The Way It Was! is a compilation of phenomenal tracks recorded by alto saxophone giant at four separate dates spanning 1956-1960. Anchored by a session with tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh, everything here is stellar. A natural ease, delightful flow, and seamless chemistry define performances ranging from the summery “All the Things You Are” to the balladic “What’s New.”

Mastered directly from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s Ultra Analog 180-gram LP brings the all-star affair to another level. Distinguished by a remarkably wide-open soundstage, superb depth, and an unlimited ceiling, the reissue allows you to hear into Pepper’s creamy tones, spirited leads, and emotional nuances. This is a luxurious mood painting in which you’ll easily get lost.
