Recorded on April 3, 1985 -- in one session! -- at One Pass' King Street Studios, San Francisco. Recorded "LIVE" just as it was performed in the studio, with no overdubbing, corrections, or trickery.
Sixteen tunes on six sides include Buddy's show-stoppers "Channel One Suite" and "West Side Story" medley, a full side devoted to each.
The entire package is in Near Mint to Unplayed condition. I remember playing only my fave Buddy Rich tune, Don Piestrup's "New Blues," when the album was new. Discs are otherwise unplayed in heavy double cardboard inserts (in addition to the tri-fold LP jacket). My tiny acquisition date sticker on the back cover is July 7, 1986. The entire package is protected in the original resealable heavy poly sleeve.
"Live" is the key. Buddy Rich may have been the Devil, certainly a magician, whose musical genius and physical gifts continue to astonish virtually all other drummers. Johnny Carson writes in his liner notes, "I recall standing with Shelly Manne and Bobby Rosengarden at the Nice Jazz Festival in 1978. We stood to the right side of the bandstand so Shelly and Bobby could watch Buddy's right foot! Jus his right foot! After the set, they looked at each, shrugged their shoulders and walked away in disbelief. It was obviously an illusion they had seen."
"Traps, The Boy Wonder" (Carson recalls the child-star billing for the young Buddy Rich) is featured here in the most complete and complex multi-media project mounted to that time, maybe of all time. The 30,000 square foot studio accommodated a live audience, and the program was a cooperative project of Pioneer Artists for their newest cutting-edge LaserDisc players, Sony Corporation for worldwide video tape releases including digital sound, Bravo Entertainment and Discover cable for pay-TV specials, the People's Republic of China National TV network to air the special, and Mobile Fidelity for two separate releases of the concert audio in both digital Compact Disc and ANALOG VINYL on their new Cafe Records label. Sony, Nakamichi, Yamaha, Crown, ALF, JBL, Monster Cable and other innovative manufacturers contributed to the hardware for this project.
The discs are formatted for compatible CBS SQ/Tate System Surround Sound, derived from the original direct-to-two-track analog masters. They are compatible with all stereo and (why would you?) mono audio systems.
Inside, I find that I saved copies of three technical articles about the project: an interview with producer Gary Rebar from ON LOCATION: The Film and Videotape Production Magazine, August 1985; "Part II," same, September 1985; and "Master Drums" from R-e/p, October 1985 (6 pages). A detailed essay by Rebar is printed inside the album.

The album is from my ridiculously large personal collection of discs and reels collected over more than 50 years. I'm not a business or multi-national corporation, nor am I selling inventory from those late-night teevee infomercials. I'm just an old guy offering treasured music to the next generations. As a collector I still thrill to the stories of my records and the performances, and may go on a bit long with some item descriptions.... Let's be patient with each other, and remember that we're trying to save the sounds!
