Description
This title (Santana - Abraxas) released by Mobile Fidelity in November 2016 was very anticipated by fans and audiophiles alike. The hype was that it would be the most advanced and detailed pressing ever made. Quite a claim....but you know what? It's true. I heard an opened copy a few days ago and the depth, realism, and enormity of the soundstage was FRIGHTENING. Folks, you will not find a better sounding and more accurate rendering of the original master tape for this album. Forget it. In addition, MFSL has taken care to add some beautiful touches to the packaging; aside from the usual reinforced jacket and audiophile inner-sleeves, they've also included a fine art print of the complete cover painting by late great surrealist painter, Mati Klarwein. The painting is called 'The Annunciation' and was completed in the summer of 1962 in Mallorca, Spain. It does have a certain relevance to the Christmas season.
The painting is derived from the story of the Archangel Gabriel announcing to the Virgin Mary that she will give birth to Jesus. In the painting we see a winged, crimson Angel Gabriel descending from heaven astride a conga drum to give the good news to the black "Virgin Mary". The original painting is owned (appropriately) by Carlos Santana.
