Up for auction is the long out of print, rare, limited edition Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab UHQR (Ultra High Quality Record) of Sir Georg Solti conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra performing Holst: The Planets. This LP is number 3479, pressed in Japan. Included in the box is the original UHQR technical manual, certificate of authenticity and blank registration card. The outer box shows signs of significant wear. The upper corners of the box lid are torn and have been repaired by transparent tape (see pic). The LP comes wrapped in a hard paper outer sleeve as well as brand new MoFi Original Master Sleeve. The interior foam padding is fully intact and is not brittle or falling to pieces. There is some noticeable surface noise during playback on both sides, but it is mostly drowned out as the music approaches crescendo. On side one there are audible pops between the performance of Mars, The Bringer of War and Venus, The Bringer of Peace, but appears to be isolated to that transition. There are visible surface marks on Side two which spans across 2 tracks and audible pops can be heard during each rotation, predominately heard during the performance of Saturn, The Bringer of Old Age, but is much less noticeable as the record continues to play through the next two pieces. It is important to note that the record skips three times during the performance of Saturn, The Bringer of Old Age (I'm using a Shure M44G cart on a Technics SL-1210MK2). Despite its blemishes on the surface, the music that resides within the grooves is nothing short of phenomenal. This is truly a wonderful performance and worth repeated listening, and I hesitate to surrender this masterpiece despite the less than perfect playback. Listening to it through my Grado SR325is headphones is a sonic revelation!
