It's the great ANIMALS, a bursting garage R&B shouter! The legendary Eric Burdon in TOP form....arranged by Frank Zappa
1966 ~ ANIMALISM .... Pure burning soul from The Animals -- a nicely stripped-down set that revels in older R&B styles -- cooked up with a version of the group that features Dave Rowberry on Hammond and lots of screaming vocals from Eric Burdon! The original Animals vibe is opened up a bit more with some heavier sounds that reflect the change of moves at the time -- but overall, the tracks are mostly shortish and respectful to the roots that inspired the group -- in a way that helps bring together music from a range of different sources. Titles include versions of Fred Neil's "Other Side Of Life", Zappa's "All Night Long", Sam Cooke's "Shake", Donovan's "Hey Gyp", and Ray Charles' "Hit The Road Jack" -- plus "Smoke Stack Lightning", "Rock Me Baby", "Outcast", "Louisiana Blues", and "Going Down Slow".
As many of you know, Frank Zappa arranged "Animalism" for the Animals in 1966, the results of which are two songs on the US-only album Animalism. There's no credit on the cover for Frank Zappa's contribution. Frank Zappa did not produce, but arranged (and almost certainly played both guitar and bass) on two tracks on Animalism: "All Night Long" and "The Other Side Of This Life." Certainly the solo on "All Night Long" sounds like Frank Zappa circa Freak Out/Absolutely Free (The very psychy guitar in the raga-rock breaks of "All Night Long" surely HAS to be Frank who also plays that very busy bass part on "Other Side..." (sounds like a guitarist playing bass) -- the guitar on "Other Side" may be Animal Hilton Valentine playing through Zappa's gear, as it has something of Zappa's SOUND, but little of his style.
