Michael 'Mick' Softley (born 1941, in South Woodford, Essex) is a British singer/songwriter and guitarist. A figurehead during the British 60's underground folk scene, Softley set up his own folk club, released a handful of great and highly collectable albums and has been known to work with Mac MacLeod , Donovan Leitch and Maddy Prior. Donovan even covered two of Softley's songs (Goldwatch Blues & The War Drags On) on his early albums.

CONDITION
Vinyl: EX
(A very nice original 1972 UK CBS Orange label first pressing which retains its full gloss and intense black sheen. There are a few minor light surface marks and fine wispy hairlines seen under bright light. On playback the record delivers excellent audio with only some occasional mild surface crackle in places, nothing serious and nothing to spoil your enjoyment of this great original UK CBS first pressing vinyl album)
Labels: Mint-
(Both labels are very clean with only a few faint spindle marks visible and no wear around the hole area)
LP Sleeve: EX
(A single unlaminated cover with matt finish. Printed and made in England by Shorewood Packaging. The sleeve has only some light wear with a small ringwear scuff on the front near the bottom edge. All the seams are solid with barely any rubbing. The spine text is clear and fully legible. A very nice example of this wear-prone 70’s cover)

MICK SOFTLEY
"Any Mother Doesn't Grumble"
Rare Original 1972 UK CBS Records 1st Pressing Vinyl LP
Rare original 1972 UK 12-track LP by this legendary and talented singer/songwriter who was one of the many to disappear to the South of France in the early sixties along with Wizz Jones, Davy Graham, Clive Palmer & Alex Campbell, only to return & start the legendary Spinning Wheel club, which lasted for a year before the police closed it down!! This album also features many of the friends Mick made through those years including Gerry Conway, Tony Cox (who also produces), Jerry Donahue, Pat Donaldson, Lyn Dobson and Barry de Souza. Grab it now, while you can!
A beautiful sensitive album, lyrically and musically, possibly the best recording by the legendary Mick Softley. Beautifully produced by Tony Cox, who also produced his previous two CBS label albums, and features on keyboards, Mick is augmented by Jerry Donahue, electric guitar, Pat Donaldson, electric bass, Gerry Conway and Barry de Souza, drums and percussion, and Lyn Dobson, soprano and tenor saxes, flute and harmonica.
Quite honestly, it's impossible to fault; every song has a beauty and significance of its own. Throughout, the arranging enhances Mick's songwriting abilities.
"The Song That I Sing," the opening track, starts off gently with Mick and guitar developing into an electric instrumental, highlighting Lyn's amazing reedwork, based on a mellow piano phrase from Tony. An effective atmospheric scene-setter for what follows.
"The Minstrel Song" exemplifies Mick's lonely plaintive sounding voice. "From The Land Of The Crab" is a personal favourite, which has a huge majestic feeling to it, creating images of some awe inspiring vastness. Tony Cox has given it almost a country arrangement, which features Lyn to good effect again. "Lady Willow" is a simple delicate song containing bird-like flutework.
"Great Wall Of Cathay" is another of Mick's songs that contains a haunting feeling of vastness and unanswerable questions. "Have You Ever Really Seen The Stars" has an intense beauty to it. Listening to it one almost feels an intruder into the man's soul.
