" THIS SPORTING LIFE / NIGHT COMES DOWN "
Original 45 on the COLUMBIA RECORDS (A LABLE DEMO) cat# DB 7510 - from 1965
A cool MOD record here, out of Shel Talmy's 'stable' of top bands with that certain appeal
to the Mod movement. Turn up the volume and your Levi's, put on your button-down shirt and boots, and cop a load of these two sides. Classic up-front production, and Talmy did get the best out of his artists, as you'll hearon this gem. The sides are even co-written by Talmy himself
(unless this was added to credit him with a bigger slice of the action?).
As enigmatic as the 'A' side is, I love the desperate aching vocal delivery on the flip. It tends towards more of a freakbeat edgeyness, and is superbly sung really, reminiscent of Van, or Jim Morrison at their best! Fans of Screaming Lord Sutch will also hear an affinity in the attitude here.
The jaunty rhythm has a tasteful guitar backing that I believe may well be Jimmy Page. He was a member of this band previous to joining The Yardbirds - appearing in promo photo shots with the group and interviews. Talmy had called on his several times to augment studio recordings around this time, with bands such as The Kinks and The Who.
The vinyl is in VG to VG+ shape, okay but not a top copy as there's a fair amount of scuff visible under a bright light, and some audible crackle evident on playing.
Lables are also VG++, respectably clean
